The complete list of CSC and SFB393 preprints is available via Abstract The SHIRA method of Mehrmann and Watkins belongs among the structure preserving Krylov subspace methods for solving skew-Hamiltonian eigenvalue problems. It can also be applied to Hamilto-nian eigenproblems by considering a suitable transformation. Structure-induced shift-and-invert techniques are employed to steer the algorithm towards the interesting region of the spectrum. However, the shift cannot be altered in the middle of the computation without discarding the information that has been accumulated so far. This paper shows how SHIRA can be combined with ideas from Ruhe's Rational Krylov algorithm to yield a method that permits an adjustment of shift after every step of the computation, adding greatly to the flexibility of the algorithm. We call this new method rational SHIRA. A numerical example is presented to demonstrate its efficiency.

Structured eigenvalue methods for the computation of corner singularities in 3D anisotropic elastic structures
This paper is concerned with the computation of 3D vertex singularities of anisotropic elastic fields. The singularities are described by eigenpairs of a corresponding operator pencil on a subdomain of the sphere. The solution approach is to introduce a modified quadratic variational boundary eigenvalue problem which consists of two self-adjoint, positive definite sesquilinear forms and a skew-...
متن کاملNumerical Solution of Quadratic Eigenvalue Problems with Structure-Preserving Methods
Numerical methods for the solution of large scale structured quadratic eigenvalue problems are discussed. We describe a new extraction procedure for the computation of eigenvectors and invariant subspaces of skew-Hamiltonian/Hamiltonian pencils using the recently proposed skew-Hamiltonian isotropic implicitly restarted Arnoldi method (SHIRA). As an application we discuss damped gyroscopic syste...
متن کاملStructure-Preserving Methods for Computing Eigenpairs of Large Sparse Skew-Hamiltonian/Hamiltonian Pencils
We study large, sparse generalized eigenvalue problems for matrix pencils, where one of the matrices is Hamiltonian and the other skew Hamiltonian. Problems of this form arise in the numerical simulation of elastic deformation of anisotropic materials, in structural mechanics and in the linear-quadratic control problem for partial diierential equations. We develop a structure-preserving skew-Ha...
متن کاملAn iterative method for the Hermitian-generalized Hamiltonian solutions to the inverse problem AX=B with a submatrix constraint
In this paper, an iterative method is proposed for solving the matrix inverse problem $AX=B$ for Hermitian-generalized Hamiltonian matrices with a submatrix constraint. By this iterative method, for any initial matrix $A_0$, a solution $A^*$ can be obtained in finite iteration steps in the absence of roundoff errors, and the solution with least norm can be obtained by choosing a special kind of...
متن کاملSolving Rational Eigenvalue Problems via Linearization
The rational eigenvalue problem is an emerging class of nonlinear eigenvalue problems arising from a variety of physical applications. In this paper, we propose a linearization-based method to solve the rational eigenvalue problem. The proposed method converts the rational eigenvalue problem into a well-studied linear eigenvalue problem, and meanwhile, exploits and preserves the structure and p...
