چکیده

Languages differ in the concepts and real-world entities for which they have words and grammatical constructs. Therefore translation must sometimes be a mat te r of approximating the meaning of a source language text rather than finding an exact counterpart in the target language. We propose a translation framework based on Situation Theory. The basic ingredients are an information lattice, a representation scheme for utterances embedded in contexts, and a mismatch resolution scheme defined in terms of information flow. We motivate our approach with examples of translation between English and Japanese.

Assessing the Quality of Persian Translation of Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four Based on House’s Model: Overt-Covert Translation Distinction

This study aimed to assess the quality of Persian translation of Orwell's (1949) Nineteen Eighty-Four by Balooch (2004) based on House's (1997) model of translation quality assessment. To do so, 23 pages (about 10 percent) of the source text were randomly selected. The profile of the source text register was produced and the genre was realized. The source text profile was compared to t...

Combining Logic-Based and Corpus-Based Methods for Resolving Translation Mismatches

Very often in good quality translations, a target language expression (word, sentence or text) differs meaning from the corresponding expression in the source language. Fortunately quality translation consists in approximating the meaning of a source document, for the same meaning often cannot be rendered exactly in the target language. This impossibility is called translation mismatch by Kamey...

Resolving Translation Ambiguity and Target Polysemy in Cross-Language Information Retrieval

This paper deals with translation ambiguity and target polysemy problems together. Two monolingual balanced corpora are employed to learn word co-occurrence for translation ambiguity resolution, and augmented translation restrictions for target polysemy resolution. Experiments show that the model achieves 62.92% of monolingual information retrieval, and is 40.80% addition to the select-all mode...

How to Overcome Translation Mismatches - An Inference Driven Mapping between Meaning Representations

This paper deals with issues that a bidirectional GermanRussian machine translation system faces when the meaning of spatial prepositions in these languages does not line up. A uniform representation language is used to define the meaning of spatial prepositions in a language independent way. This formal language makes it possible to compare monolingual meaning representations and allows for th...
