Assessment of Tracheal Stenosis Using Active Shape Models of Healthy Tracheas: A Surface Registration Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Tracheal stenosis is a life threatening condition for which the successful treatment relies on the precise evaluation of its dimensions and severity. Recently, Active Shape Models (ASMs) were proposed for stenosis assessment and stent prediction, with promising results. An effective ASM, however, depends on the applied surface registration technique, which should not be influenced by the stenotic regions. The present work reviews previously proposed registration techniques and formulates a new method to estimate the shape of the healthy trachea of a patient with stenosis. Experiments with real and simulation data showed that the new method outperforms the conventional methods with respect to registration accuracy.

Background and purpose: Airway stenosis is one the most dangerous diseases. Anethum graveolens L.(Dill) has anti-spastic effect on smooth muscle. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the hydroalcoholic extract of this plant on male rat tracheal smooth muscle contractile activity. Materials and methods: In this experimental study, tracheas of healthy rats were dissected. We in...

BACKGROUND Postintubation tracheal stenosis (PITS) is associated with an increased use of assisted ventilation in intensive care units. We investigated both collagen type I accumulation and myofibroblast localization in human PITS lesions excised for surgical therapeutic procedures, compared with normal tracheas. METHODS We analyzed 2 segments of normal tracheas and 10 segments of PITS that w...
متن کاملThe use of magnetic resonance imaging to assess tracheal stenosis following percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy.
The incidence of tracheal stenosis following conventional tracheostomy has been reported as lying between one and 30 per cent. Methods used to assess the degree of stenosis include CT scanning, fibreoptic visualization and plain X-ray tomographs. The aim of this study was to assess the degree of stenosis in patients following percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy (PDT) using MRI scanning. This...
متن کاملThe Role of Tracheal Stenting As an Alternative Treatment in Cicatricial and Non-Operable Tracheal Stenosis
Introduction: Tracheal stenosis is normally caused by trauma, infection, benign and malignant tumors, prolonged intubation or tracheostomy. The best treatment for tracheal stenosis is resection and anastomosis of trachea. Yet the major surgical complication of tracheal surgery is postoperative stenosis. The goal of this paper is to study the result of tracheal stenting as a replacement therap...

Abstract Background: Iatrogenic airway injury after endotracheal intubation and tracheotomy remains a serious clinical problem. In this study we reviewed post-intubation and traumatic tracheal stenosis in 47 patients with a special attention to the cause, hense surgical treatment of the stenosis was performed and the results compared with the literatures. Methods: Since February 1995 th...
