Coho Salmon and Water Management in the Klamath Basin 6

چکیده
The purpose of this chapter is to assist the broadest possible readership in understanding the ongoing controversy regarding the stipulation of minimum flows in the lower Klamath River between April and September 2001 to protect threatened coho salmon. It is not intended to be an evaluation of the National Marine Fisheries Service’s (NMFS) Biological Opinion (BiOp) on Klamath Basin coho salmon. Instead, it aims to provide a synthesis of the most relevant hypotheses (or theories with a small “t” as defined in Chapter 4, “Science”), data, and conclusions from available reports and studies on coho salmon in the Klamath Basin. The topics covered are:

Density of the waterborne parasite Ceratomyxa shasta and its biological effects on salmon.
The myxozoan parasite Ceratomyxa shasta is a significant pathogen of juvenile salmonids in the Pacific Northwest of North America and is limiting recovery of Chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and coho (O. kisutch) salmon populations in the Klamath River. We conducted a 5-year monitoring program that comprised concurrent sentinel fish exposures and water sampling across 212 river kilometers of ...
متن کاملWater Temperature Patterns below Large Groundwater Springs: Management Implications for Coho Salmon in the Shasta River, California
Elevated stream temperature is a primary factor limiting the coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) population in California’s Shasta River Basin. Understanding the mechanisms driving spatial and temporal trends in water temperature throughout the Shasta River is critical to prioritising river restoration efforts aimed at protecting this threatened species. During the summer, the majority of stream...

www.frontiersinecology.org © The Ecological Society of America C based on the perceived needs of ecosystems versus humans for fresh water are increasingly seen in the news. In the US, a fiery debate has erupted in the Klamath basin of Oregon and California, where farmers have protested the loss of irrigation water to protect endangered fish, and where over 30 000 chinook salmon and other fish r...
متن کاملDisparate infection patterns of Ceratomyxa shasta (Myxozoa) in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) correlate with internal transcribed spacer-1 sequence variation in the parasite.
Ceratomyxa shasta is a virulent myxosporean parasite of salmon and trout in the Pacific Northwest of North America. The parasite is endemic in the Klamath River, Oregon/California, where a series of dams prevent movement of fish hosts between the upper and lower parts of the basin. Ceratomyxa shasta exhibits a range of infection patterns in different fish species above and below the dams. We hy...
متن کاملWater War in the Klamath Basin: Macho Law, Combat Biology, and Dirty Politics
In July 2001, employees of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation closed the big steel gates across the intake of a major irrigation canal just outside the town of Klamath Falls, Oregon. Water stopped flowing to about 85% of the farms in the Klamath Basin, a high-elevation bowl ringed by forested mountains on the Oregon–California border. The ostensible purpose of the shutdown was to protect three thre...
