Electro-optic Shutters and Filters

چکیده
The psychologist and the visual scientist often need a rapid and silent means of interrupting or attenuating light. By using fluorescent lamps, glow-modulator tubes, light-emitting diodes, electroluminescent panels or cathode-ray tubes, it is sometimes feasible to modulate the light source : but often, because the light must be very intense or because particular spectral bands are required or because the stimulus is complex or naturalistic, an independent shutter or filter is needed. Mechanical shutters may not offer the requisite speed or silence; and their vibration may disturb other optical components, such as pellicles. An opaque vane, or a very small mirror, mounted on a galvanometer or a stepping motor, may be fast and almost noiseless, but can be used only when the aperture is small (in a Maxwellianview system, for example, where small images of the light source are formed). In the hope of finding a further solution to this recurrent and very general problem, we have examined the potential of materials of the class known as liquid crystals. The optical properties of some of these materials may be altered by the application of electric fields. We describe the principles, the advantages, and the limitations of liquid crystal devices, and offer a guide to their use.

Biomedical Optical Applications of Liquid Crystal Devices
Liquid crystals exhibit large electro-optic effects which make them useful for a variety of applications as fast, compact, and tunable spectral filters, phase modulators, polarization controllers, and optical shutters. They were largely developed for liquid crystal displays and in the last decade for optical telecommunications, however their application in the field of optical imaging just star...
متن کاملSimulation and Design of an Organic Quantum Film Electrooptic Switch
In this paper the simulation and design of a quantum-film electro-optic switch is considered. This photonic device, is made from a new organic dipolar material called MNA or 2-methyl-4 nitroaniline, which possesses a high merit in comparison with it's inorganic counterparts (e.g. LiNbO3, GaAs, InSb, Quartz, etc). Montecarlo method is used to simulate the photon-it-electron interaction in this m...

In this review paper we showcase recent activities on silicon photonics science and technology research in Hong Kong regarding two important topical areas — microresonator devices and optical nonlinearities. Our work on silicon microresonator filters, switches and modulators have shown promise for the nascent development of on-chip optoelectronic signal processing systems, while our studies on ...
متن کاملPolarization-insensitive multi-wavelength switching based on polarization-selective long-period fiber gratings.
Novel multi-wavelength switching filters based on cascaded long-period fiber gratings and polarization-maintaining fiber in a Sagnac loop configuration are proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The rapid wavelength switching is achieved by an electro-optic polarization controller. The device is independent of the polarization state of the input light due to the bi-directional polarization c...
متن کاملBeam-focus shaping by use of programmable phase-only filters: application to an ultralong focal line.
We have developed a high-resolution programmable adaptive-optic device based on an optically addressed liquid-crystal electro-optic valve controlled by an achromatic three-wave lateral shearing interferometer. We apply this phase-only filter and loop to shape the far-field pattern of laser beams. As a first application, we theoretically compute and experimentally verify the focus along a line l...
