چکیده

A fusion classifier composed of two modules, one made by a hidden Markov model (HMM) and the other by a support vector machine (SVM), is proposed to recognize faces with pose variations in open-set recognition settings. The HMM module captures the evolution of facial features across a subject’s face using the subject’s facial images only, without referencing to the faces of others. Because of the captured evolutionary process of facial features, the HMM module retains certain robustness against pose variations, yielding low false rejection rates (FRR) for recognizing faces across poses. This is, however, on the price of poor false acceptance rates (FAR) when recognizing other faces because it is built upon withinclass samples only. The SVM module in the proposed model is developed following a special design able to substantially diminish the FAR and further lower down the FRR. The proposed fusion classifier has been evaluated in performance using the CMU PIE database, and proven effective for open-set face recognition with pose variations. Experiments have also shown that it outperforms the face classifier made by HMM or SVM alone. Keywords—Face recognition, open-set identification, hidden Markov model, support vector machines.

Face Recognition under Pose and Expresivity Variation Using Thermal and Visible Images

Many existing works in face recognition are based solely on visible images. The use of bimodal systems based on visible and thermal images is seldom reported in face recognition, despite its advantage of combining the discriminative power of both modalities, under expressions or pose variations. In this paper, we investigate the combined advantages of thermal and visible face recognition on a P...

3D Face Recognition using Patch Geodesic Derivative Pattern

In this paper, a novel Patch Geodesic Derivative Pattern (PGDP) describing the texture map of a face through its shape data is proposed. Geodesic adjusted textures are encoded into derivative patterns for similarity measurement between two 3D images with different pose and expression variations. An extensive experimental investigation is conducted using the publicly available Bosphorus and BU-3...

Sample-oriented Domain Adaptation for Image Classification

Image processing is a method to perform some operations on an image, in order to get an enhanced image or to extract some useful information from it. The conventional image processing algorithms cannot perform well in scenarios where the training images (source domain) that are used to learn the model have a different distribution with test images (target domain). Also, many real world applicat...

Multimodal Recognition Method based on Ear and Profile Face Feature Fusion

The performance of ear recognition is influenced by pose variation. For the similar position of ear and profile face, a multimodal recognition method is proposed based on the feature fusion of ear and profile face information. A model for ear and profile face feature fusion and recognition is built. The Log-Gabor features of ear and profile face are first extracted separately, and two features ...

Efficient Discriminate Component Analysis using Support Vector Machine Classifier on Invariant Pose and Illumination Face Images

Face recognition is the process of categorizing a person in an image by evaluating with a known face image library. The pose and illumination variations are two main practical confronts for an automatic face recognition system. This study proposes a novel face recognition algorithm known as Efficient Discriminant Component Analysis (EDCA) for face recognition under varying poses and illuminatio...
