Marine Bioluminescence: Mechanisms and Evaluation

چکیده

In this report we emphasize our efforts towards elucidating the intracellular processes involved in sensing a mechanical stimulus and transducing that stimulus into a biochemical reaction resulting in light output. Bioluminescent dinoflagellates are ideal for such work because they are free-living singlecelled organisms, making it relatively simple to examine intracellular transduction events; and they are commonly the major producers of surface bioluminescence in the ocean.

Bioluminescence in the sea.

Bioluminescence spans all oceanic dimensions and has evolved many times--from bacteria to fish--to powerfully influence behavioral and ecosystem dynamics. New methods and technology have brought great advances in understanding of the molecular basis of bioluminescence, its physiological control, and its significance in marine communities. Novel tools derived from understanding the chemistry of ...

Bioluminescence in the ocean: origins of biological, chemical, and ecological diversity.

From bacteria to fish, a remarkable variety of marine life depends on bioluminescence (the chemical generation of light) for finding food, attracting mates, and evading predators. Disparate biochemical systems and diverse phylogenetic distribution patterns of light-emitting organisms highlight the ecological benefits of bioluminescence, with biochemical and genetic analyses providing new insigh...

Isolation, identification and characterization of new luminous bacteria from Chah Bahar Port, southern marine habitat of Iran

Coastal region of Chah Bahar port, Sea of Oman, was screened for the presence of bioluminescence bacteria for the first time. Water samples were taken from surface and subsurface layers and immediately spread on nutrient seawater complete (SWC) agar. Luminous colonies were observed after an overnight incubation at 25°C. Among twenty luminous isolates, four of them were selected for preliminary ...

The origins of marine bioluminescence: turning oxygen defence mechanisms into deep-sea communication tools.

Bioluminescence, the emission of ecologically functional light by living organisms, emerged independently on several occasions, yet the evolutionary origins of most bioluminescent systems remain obscure. We propose that the luminescent substrates of the luminous reactions (luciferins) are the evolutionary core of most systems, while luciferases, the enzymes catalysing the photogenic oxidation o...

Imaging reversal of multidrug resistance in living mice with bioluminescence: MDR1 P-glycoprotein transports coelenterazine.

Coelenterazine is widely distributed among marine organisms, producing bioluminescence by calcium-insensitive oxidation mediated by Renilla luciferase (Rluc) and calcium-dependent oxidation mediated by the photoprotein aequorin. Despite its abundance in nature and wide use of both proteins as reporters of gene expression and signal transduction, little is known about mechanisms of coelenterazin...
