More than ten years ago a first step toward quantum error correction (QEC) was implemented [Phys. The work showed there was sufficient control in nuclear magnetic resonance to implement QEC, and demonstrated that the error rate changed from to ∼ 2. In the current work we reproduce a similar experiment using control techniques that have been since developed, such as the pulses generated by gradient ascent pulse engineering algorithm. We show that the fidelity of the QEC gate sequence and the comparative advantage of QEC are appreciably improved. This advantage is maintained despite the errors introduced by the additional operations needed to protect the quantum states.

Fidelity of a t-error-correcting quantum code with more than t errors
It is important to study the behavior of a t-error-correcting quantum code when the number of errors is greater than t because it is likely that there are also small errors besides t large correctable errors. We estimate the fidelity of a t-error-correcting stabilizer code over a general memoryless channel, allowing more than t errors. We also show that the fidelity can be made arbitrary close ...
متن کاملConcurrent remote entanglement with quantum error correction against photon losses
Remote entanglement of distant, noninteracting quantum entities is a key primitive for quantum information processing. We present a protocol to remotely entangle two stationary qubits by first entangling them with propagating ancilla qubits and then performing a joint two-qubit measurement on the ancillas. Subsequently, single-qubit measurements are performed on each of the ancillas. We describ...
متن کاملQuantum error correction beyond qubits
Quantum computation and communication rely on the ability to manipulate quantum states robustly and with high fidelity. To protect fragile quantum-superposition states from corruption through so-called decoherence noise, some form of error correction is needed. Therefore, the discovery of quantum error correction1,2 (QEC) was a key step to turn the field of quantum information from an academic ...
متن کاملSyndrome measurement order for the [[7, 1, 3]] quantum error correction code
The [[7,1,3]] quantum error correction code uses sets of three syndrome measurements to separately detect bit-flip and phase-flip errors. To comply with the strictures of fault tolerance and thus stem the possible spread of errors to multiple qubits, each set of syndromes is repeated twice. Still, there remains flexibility in the order in which the sets of syndromes are implemented. Here we exp...
متن کاملThe Effects of Symmetries on Quantum Fidelity Decay
We explore the effect of a system’s symmetries on fidelity decay behavior. Chaos-like exponential fidelity decay behavior occurs in non-chaotic systems when the system possesses symmetries and the applied perturbation is not tied to a classical parameter. Similar systems without symmetries exhibit faster-than-exponential decay under the same type of perturbation. This counter-intuitive result, ...
