On compositional semantics

چکیده
We prove a theorem stating that any semantics can be encoded as a composit ional semantics, which means that, essentially, the standard definition of composit ionali ty is formally vacuous. We then show that when one requires composi t ional semantics to be "systematic" ( that is the meaning funct ion cannot be arbitrary, but mus t belong to some class), one can easily distinguish between composit ional and non-composi t ional semantics. We also present an example o f a simple g rammar for which there is no "systematic" composit ional semantics. This implies that it is possible to distinguish "good" and "bad" grammars oll the basis of whether they can have composit ional semantics. As a result, we believe that the paper clarifies the concept o f compositionali ty and opens a possibility of making systematic compar isons o f different systems of grammars and N L U programs.

Translation-Based Compositional Reasoning for Software Systems
Software systems are often model checked by translating them into a directly model-checkable formalism. Any serious software system requires application of compositional reasoning to overcome the computational complexity of model checking. This paper presents Translation-Based Compositional Reasoning (TBCR), an approach to application of compositional reasoning in the context of model checking ...
متن کاملEstimating Linear Models for Compositional Distributional Semantics
In distributional semantics studies, there is a growing attention in compositionally determining the distributional meaning of word sequences. Yet, compositional distributional models depend on a large set of parameters that have not been explored. In this paper we propose a novel approach to estimate parameters for a class of compositional distributional models: the additive models. Our approa...

متن کاملA Compositional Automata-Based Semantics for Property Patterns
Dwyer et al. define a language to specify dynamic properties based on predefined patterns and scopes. To define a property, the user has to choose a pattern and a scope among a limited number of them. Dwyer et al. define the semantics of these properties by translating each composition of a pattern and a scope into usual temporal logics (LTL, CTL, etc.). First, this translational semantics is n...
متن کاملUTCP: Compositional Semantics for Shared-Variable Concurrency
We present a Unifying Theories of Programming (UTP) semantics of shared variable concurrency that is fully compositional. Previous work was based on mapping such programs, using labelling of decision points and atomic actions, to action systems, which themselves were provided with a UTP semantics. The translation to action systems was largely compositional, but their dynamic semantics was based...
متن کامل2 an or - Compositional Semantics for Logic
In this chapter we show a semantics for pure logic programs which correctly models computed answer substitutions and which is compositional wrt union of programs (i.e. OR-compositional). According to the general approach described in 15], the semantics is based on a domain which consists of sets of (equivalence classes of) clauses. We rst deene an operational version O(P) of the semantics and w...
