چکیده

The localization of electromagnetic waves in lossless inhomogeneous dielectric media is studied. We consider a three-dimensional lossless periodic medium (photonic crystal) having a gap in the frequency spectrum (photonic bandgap). If such a medium is perturbed by either a single defect or a random array of defects, exponentially localized electromagnetic waves arise with frequencies in the gap. For a single defect, we derive equations for these midgap frequencies and estimate their number. For a random medium, we show the occurrence of Anderson localization for electromagnetic waves. © 1998 Optical Society of America [S0740-3232(98)00305-6] OCIS codes: 260.2110, 350.7420.

Slow-light enhanced absorption for bio-chemical sensing applications: potential of low-contrast lossy materials

Slow-light enhanced absorption in liquid-infiltrated photonic crystals has recently been proposed as a route to compensate for the reduced optical path in typical lab-on-a-chip systems for bio-chemical sensing applications. A simple perturbative expression has been applied to ideal structures composed of lossless dielectrics. In this work we study the enhancement in structures composed of lossy...

Casimir stress in an inhomogeneous medium

The Casimir effect in an inhomogeneous dielectric is investigated using Lifshitz’s theory of electromagnetic vacuum energy. A permittivity function that depends continuously on one Cartesian coordinate is chosen, bounded on each side by homogeneous dielectrics. The result for the Casimir stress is infinite everywhere inside the inhomogeneous region, a divergence that does not occur for piece-wi...

Optically-induced charge separation and terahertz emission in unbiased dielectrics

Charge separation mediated by linearly-polarized light in transparent insulators is analyzed numerically by integrating the equations of motion of a bound charge. It is shown that large static and transient dipole moments can be induced by the magnetic component of light at nonrelativistic intensities regardless of whether the pumplight is coherent or incoherent. Quantitative estimates show tha...

Dispersion of Homogeneous and Inhomogeneous Waves in the Yee Finite-Difference Time-Domain Grid

The numerical dispersion relation governing the propagation of homogeneous plane waves in a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) grid is well known. However, homogeneous plane waves, by themselves, do not form a complete basis set capable of representing all valid field distributions. A complete basis set is obtained by including inhomogeneous waves where, in the physical world, constant phase ...
