Automatic Tripartite Classification of Intransitive Verbs

چکیده
In this paper, we introduce a tripartite scheme for the classification of intransitive verbs for Hindi and claim it to be a more suitable model of classification than the classical binary unaccusative/unergative classification. We develop a multi-class SVM classifier based model for automatic classification of intransitive verbs into proposed tripartite classes. We rank the unaccusative diagnostic tests for Hindi based on their authenticity in attesting an intransitive verb under unaccussative class. We show that the use of the ranking score in the feature of the classifier improves the efficiency of the classification model even with a small amount of data. The empirical result illustrates the fact that judicious use of linguistic knowledge builds a better classification model than the one that is purely statistical.

Mandarin Intransitive Reflexive Verbs and the Unaccusative Hypothesis (Mandarin Intransitive Reflexive Verbs)
The present paper focuses on the Mandarin Intransitive keflexive Verbs. These verbs, such as zi-sha 'to commit suicide', and zi fen 'to burn oneself, are formed with a reflexive morpheme zi-'self' and a root verb. Take the verb zi-sha 'to commit suicide' for example, the reflexive morpheme contributes the reflexive meaning and the root verb sha 'to kill' contributes the meaning`to kill'; hence,...

In this paper I argue that inflection class membership among the so-called ‘primary’ verbs in Lithuanian, which has always been considered to be extremely idiosyncratic, is at least partly predictable from the verb’s semantics. The most important semantic parameters responsible for inflection class assignment are agentivity of the verb’s highest ranking participant (thus most transitive and age...
متن کاملReflections on Manner/Result Complementarity
Nonstative verbs from various lexical fields are often classified as either manner or result verbs—a distinction implicated in language acquisition (Behrend 1990, Gentner 1978, Gropen et al. 1991), as well as in argument realization. Intuitively speaking, manner verbs specify as part of their meaning a manner of carrying out an action, while result verbs specify the coming about of a result sta...

This language is spoken by only 245 people in three villages, namely Kampung Kuala Lah, Kampung Baru and Kampung Kuala Stail. This paper analyzes transitive and intransitive verb phrases in Mendriq. The primary data of Mendriq language were obtained through fieldwork funded by a research grant (UKM-GUP-PLW-08-...
متن کاملRunning head : PROCESSING INTRANSITIVE VERBS 1 Processing
Previous studies have demonstrated that, for adults, differences between unaccusative verbs (e.g. fall) and unergative verbs (e.g. dance) lead to a difference in processing. However, so far we don’t know whether this effect shows up in children’s processing of these verbs as well. This study measures children’s processing of intransitive verbs using the Visual World Paradigm. We find that child...
