چکیده

In most patients with myelomatosis, the serum electrophoretic pattern characteristically contains an anomalous component. Occasionally, however, patterns of the " myeloma " type are found in patients in whom the clinical findings and laboratory evidence do not support a diagnosis of myelomatosis. In this paper, the case histories of 10 such patients are presented and the significance of the findings discussed. Three of these cases have been referred to already (Owen and Rider, 1957).

Criteria for Identification of Homogeneous Electrophoretic Peaks in Multiple Myeloma †

In 1939, Longsworth, Shedlovsky and MacInnes described the occurrence of abnormal Tiselius electrophoretic patterns in multiple myeloma.' These findings were confirmed by Kekwick,5 Gutman! and Moore' and their coworkers who pointed out that the characteristic pattern showed a sharp, narrow globulin component of variable electrophoretic mobility. During the next decade electrophoretic analyses o...

Myelomatosis with the a2-type serum protein pattern.

By J. A. OWEN AND W. D. RIDER P ATIENTS WITH MYELOMATOSIS, whose electrophoretic serum protein patterns have contained a discrete component in the a2-globulin fraction, have been described on very few occasions; moreover, not all of the reported cases have been universally accepted as instances of “a2-type” myeloma protein. Indeed, Waldenstr#{246}m1’2 has questioned the existence of the “a2-typ...

The biological significance of the anomalous serum and urinary proteins of myelomatosis, lymphoma, and other conditions.

The frequent occurrence of protein anomalies in patients with myelomatosis has long been recognized. Bence Jones reported on the unusual urinary protein of a patient with this disease over a hundred years ago (Bence Jones, 1848). Hyperproteinaemia in myelomatosis was recorded somewhat later (Ellinger, 1899). Subsequently, electrophoretic studies have shown that the hyperproteinaemia is due to t...

Electrophoretic analysis of serum and urinary proteins in the diagnosis of myelomatosis.

Electrophoresis, using either the classical method of Tiselius or zone electrophoresis on paper, has been widely employed in the study of serum and urinary proteins in myelomatosis, but so far few investigators have examined the diagnostic value of this procedure. In an attempt to make such an assessment, we have compared critically the results of electrophoretic analyses of serum and urinary p...

Estimation of serum albumin: a comparison of three methods.

Comparison of the methyl orange method of estimation of serum albumin with sodium sulfate fractionation and electrophoretic fractionation on paper showed that the sodium sulfate method may occasionally give much lower results than the other two. This may be due to loss of albumin on the precipitated globulins. Of the three, the methyl orange method tended to give the highest results, but was ap...
