Sugar and Sugar Alcohol Levels in the Aging Rat Lens.
نویسنده
چکیده
Fructose and sorbitol accumulate in the aging rat lens, the levels rising from values of 7 and 17 mg. per 100 Gin. wet lens weight, respectively, in weanlings, to 27 and 34 mg. per 100 Gm. in 200-day-old animals. The formation of fructose and sorbitol from glucose via the sorbitol pathway apparently decreases with age. Penetration of the lens in vitro by fructose-U-C-14 decreases with age. Furthermore, since the levels of glucose in the lens and aqueous humor and of fructose in the aqueous humor do not increase with age, the increased levels of fructose and sorbitol in older lenses must be a consequence of the failure of fructose to escape as readily from older lenses as from younger lenses.

Effect of Diabecon on sugar-induced lens opacity in organ culture: mechanism of action.
Cataract is the leading cause of blindness worldwide. Apart from ageing, diabetes has been considered to be one of the major risk factors of cataract. The high sugar levels in diabetes may cause tissue disruption and intumescences by osmotic changes induced via aldose reductase (AR) mediated polyol pathway. Therefore, agents that can inhibit AR and prevent sorbitol accumulation may be helpful t...
متن کاملScopoletin Inhibits Rat Aldose Reductase Activity and Cataractogenesis in Galactose-Fed Rats
Cataracts are a major cause of human blindness. Aldose reductase (AR) is an important rate-limiting enzyme that contributes to cataract induction in diabetic patients. Scopoletin is the main bioactive constituent of flower buds from Magnolia fargesii and is known to inhibit AR activity. To assess scopoletin's ability to mitigate sugar cataract formation in vivo, we studied its effects in a rat ...
متن کاملProduction of fructose and fructose-3-phosphate in maturing rat lenses.
PURPOSE A large increase in glycation of crystallins between 1 and 8 months has been demonstrated in lenses obtained from aging rats. The objective of this study was to investigate if an age-associated increase in the levels of any of the phosphorylated and nonphosphorylated sugars in the aging rat lenses could be correlated with this increase. METHODS Lenses were obtained from Sprague-Dawley...
متن کاملDesign and Optimization of Novel Sugar Alcohol Based Extended Release Tablets Prepared by Melt Dispersion Technique
The aim of this study is to prepare novel sorbitol based extended release tablets by melt dispersion method using carbamazepine as a model drug. Carbamazepine was melted along with sugar alcohol to get melt dispersion granules (MGDs) and was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and solubility study. The physical and chemical parameters...
متن کاملChanges Associated with the Appearance of Mature Sugar Cataracts.
Analyses for lens sugar alcohols, fructose, glucose, ATP, dry weight, hydration, and extracellular space were made before and after the appearance of mature diabetic and galactose cataracts. The appearance of mature cataracts in galactose-fed rats is associated with a marked and sudden decrease in the level of lens sugar alcohol, ATP, and dry weight, and an increase in lens hydration and extrac...
