Observational Tests of Intergalactic Enrichment Models

چکیده
We summarize recent results assessing the carbon and silicon abundances of the intergalactic medium (IGM) using the ‘pixel optical depth’ technique. We briefly discuss the implications of these results for models of intergalactic enrichment, focusing on distinguishing ‘early’ z ≫ 4 enrichment by the first generations of stars and objects from ‘late’ enrichment by 2 ∼ z ∼ 5 Lybreak galaxies. We then discuss the comparison of observed QSO spectra to simulated spectra generated from cosmological simulations that self-consistently include enrichment, and draw qualitative implications for the general picture of intergalactic enrichment at z ∼ 2. How Did the Igm Become Enriched?
The enrichment of the intergalactic medium with heavy elements is a process that lies at the nexus of poorly-understood aspects of physical cosmology. We review current understanding of the processes that may remove metals from galaxies, the basic predictions of these models, the key observational constraints on enrichment, and how intergalactic enrichment may be used to test cosmological simul...
متن کاملMetal Absorption Lines as Probes of the Intergalactic Medium Prior to the Reionization Epoch
Winds from star-forming galaxies provide the most promising explanation for the enrichment of the intergalactic medium with heavy elements. Theoretical and observational arguments indicate that the pollution may have occurred at z & 6; however, direct observational tests of such a scenario are needed. We model starburst winds in the high-redshift universe and find that the fraction of space fil...
متن کاملAbundances in the high - redshift Intergalactic Medium
The enrichment of the intergalactic medium (IGM) with heavy elements provides us with a record of past star formation and with an opportunity to study the interactions between galaxies and their environments. We summarize current data analysis methods and observational constraints on abundances in the diffuse, high-redshift (z > 2) IGM. This review is targeted at interested outsiders and attemp...
متن کاملMetal enrichment of the intergalactic medium at z=3 by galactic winds
Studies of quasar absorption lines reveal that the low density intergalactic medium at z ∼ 3 is enriched to 10−10 solar metallicity. This enrichment may have occurred in an early generation of Population III stars at redshift z ∼> 10, by protogalaxies at 6 ∼< z ∼< 10, or by larger galaxies at 3 ∼< z ∼< 6. This paper addresses the third possiblity by calculating the enrichment of the IGM at z ∼>...
متن کاملThe Origin of Intergalactic Metals around Lyman-break Galaxies
Theoretical and observational arguments suggest that the intergalactic medium (IGM) might have been polluted with metals produced by early star formation. In this scenario, Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at redshift z = 3 are likely to be surrounded by old metal bubbles, relics of an era when the characteristic mass of galaxies was small and gas retainment more difficult. We find that pregalactic ...
