Persistence and Degradation of Pesticides in Composting

چکیده

Introduction Composting is a process in which microorganisms rapidly consume organic matter, using it as an energy source and converting it into carbon dioxide, water, microbial biomass, heat and compost. Feedstock used to fuel the composting process may originate from a number of different sources, including yard trimmings, manure, biosolids, and agricultural residues. These materials may contain a number of synthetic organic compounds or xenobiotics, including pesticides.

Fate of xenobiotics during composting

A primary concern with composting is the lack of knowledge about the fate of widely used pesticides. Also, there is increasing interest in the use of composting as a bioremediation method for soils contaminated with xenobiotics such as TNT, PCBs, chlorophenols and PAHs. We used a laboratory scale composting system to determine the extent of mineralization, incorporation into humic matter, and v...

Sorption, degradation and leaching of pesticides in soils amended with organic matter: A review

The use of pesticides in modern agriculture is unavoidable because they are required to control weeds. Pesticides are poisonous; hence, they are dangerous if misused. Understanding the fate of pesticides will be useful to use them safely. Therefore, contaminations of water and soil resources could be avoided. The fates of pesticides in soils are influenced by their sorption, decomposition and m...

Bioremediation of heavy metals and organic toxicants by composting.

Hazardous organic and metallic residues or by-products can enter into plants, soils, and sediments from processes associated with domestic, municipal, agricultural, industrial, and military activities. Handling, ingestion, application to land or other distributions of the contaminated materials into the environment might render harm to humans, livestock, wildlife, crops, or native plants. Consi...

Degradation of pirimiphos-methyl during thermophilic composting of greenhouse tomato plant residues

Ghaly, A.E., Alkoaik, F. and Snow, A, 2007. Degradation of pirimiphos-methyl during thermophilic composting of greenhouse tomato plant residues. Canadian Biosystems Engineering/Le génie des biosystèmes au Canada 49: 6.1 6.11. The effectiveness of invessel thermophilic composting on the destruction of pirimiphos-methyl (12, 24, and 36 mg/kg dry matter) was evaluated. The bioreactor operated on a...

Microbial degradation and humification of the lawn care pesticide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid during the composting of yard trimmings.

The fate of the widely used lawn care herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) during the composting of yard trimmings consisting of primarily leaves and grass is an important unexplored question. In this study, we determined the extent of 2,4-D mineralization, incorporation into humic matter, volatilization, and sorption during the composting of yard trimmings. Yard trimmings (2:1 [wt/...
