BERGER,LAWRENCE,T'SAIFANY~~ANDALEXANDER B. GUTMAN. Efect of drugs that alter uric acid excretion in man on uric acid clearance in the chicken. Am. J. Physiol. rg8(3) : 575-580. 1960. -In 43 chickens, the mean Cinulin was 4.7 + I .8 ml/min. (I .8 =t 0.8 ml/kg/ min.), mean C urate 29.0 rt 14.9 ml/min. (I 1.3 =t 6.0 ml/kg/ min.) and mean Turate 1.30 zt 0.69 mg/min. (0.48 & 0.24 mg/kg/ min.). Tubular secretion accounted for a mean of 81 yO of the total urinary urate. Probenecid, sulfinpyrazone, zoxazolamine and high dosages of phenylbutazone, all uricosuric in man, reduced urate excretion in the chicken, apparently by suppressing tubular secretion of urate; C&n also was reduced. Salicylate, in doses uricosuric in man, had no effect on chicken urate excretion. Pyrazinamide and sodium rlactate, agents which decrease urate excretion in man, did not alter urate excretion in the chicken. PAH loading experiments demonstrated that as TrAn increased, Turate decreased. These latter findings suggest competition of urate and PAH for renal tubular transport in the chicken.

Effects of probenecid, sodium salicylate, 2,4-dinitrophenol and pyrazinamide on renal secretion of uric acid in chickens.
According to classical concepts, uric acid is presumably filtered at the renal glomeruli andl reabsorbed but not secreted by the renal tubules in man (Berliner et at., 1950). Recent work (Y#{252} and Gutman, 1959) suggests that uric acid may, however, be both secreted and reabsorbed by the tubules. In this species probenecid and salicylates may either increase renal excretion of uric acid, and ...
متن کاملEffects of uricosuric drugs and diuretics on uric acid excretion in oxonate-treated rats.
A practical procedure for evaluating uricosuric agents was demonstrated using clearance experiments with potassium oxonate-treated rats. The fractional excretion value of uric acid showed a reabsorptive net flux of uric acid in the renal tubules of the animal, though the value was obviously higher than those of primates such as men, chimpanzees and cebus monkeys. However, the rats responded wel...
متن کاملEvaluation of Serum Uric Acid and Glutathione Levels in Diabetic Patients and Healthy Subjects
Objective: It is well known that diabetes is one of the main health challenges. According to the evidence presented in recent years by investigators, serum uric acid has emerged as a possible risk factor for diabetes mellitus. The aim of the present study was to compare the mean serum uric acid and the antioxidant activity of glutathione levels in patients with diabetes and the control group. ...
متن کاملEffect of olive (Olea europaea) extract on levels of urea and uric acid in normal and streptozotocin-diabetic rats
Increasing the level of urea and uric acid is an associated complication of diabetes mellitus. Many spices and herbs are known to be hypoglycaemic. Olea europaea belonging to the family oleaceae is widely used in herbal medicine for the treatment of diabetes. The present study was carried out to investigate the role of the alcoholic extract from leaves of olive on level of urea and uric acid in...
متن کاملEffect of garlic (Allium sativum) extract on levels of urea and uric acid in normal and streptozotocin-diabetic rats
The effects of garlic bulbs alcoholic extract (Allium sativum) on the level of urea and uric acid were investigated in both normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. The normal and diabetic rats were administrated orally with the extract (100, 250, 500 mg/kg) or glibenclamide (600 mg/kg) for 14 days. Oral administration of the garlic extract (0.25 and 0.5 g/kg body wt.) for 14 days exhib...
