Dielectrophoretic Characterization of Colloidal Particles Using Angled Microelectrode Arrays
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper will present a characterization of a microfluidic device with embedded angled microelectrode arrays for the continuous flow-through dielectrophoretic separation of particles. The operation of the device is demonstrated using samples of colloidal latex spheres, achieving 100% particle deflection with low operating voltage of 10V. This characterization is essential for dielectrophoretic separation to get the specific indication for each particle type behaviour, deflection and hence separation at the end of the arrays. This paper will discuss results obtained and also detail of the theoretical background of the separation method and the optimization of separation that is achievable by choice of frequency and voltage. Enhanced sub-micron colloidal particle separation with interdigitated microelectrode arrays using mixed AC/DC dielectrophoretic scheme.
Dielectrophoretic separation of particles finds a variety of applications in the capture of species such as cells, viruses, proteins, DNA from biological systems, as well as other organic and inorganic contaminants from water. The ability to capture particles is constrained by poor volumetric scaling of separation force with respect to particle diameter, as well as the weak penetration of elect...
متن کاملSeparation of submicron bioparticles by dielectrophoresis.
Submicron particles such as latex spheres and viruses can be manipulated and characterized using dielectrophoresis. By the use of appropriate microelectrode arrays, particles can be trapped or moved between regions of high or low electric fields. The magnitude and direction of the dielectrophoretic force on the particle depends on its dielectric properties, so that a heterogeneous mixture of pa...

Dielectrophoresis is the movement of particles in nonuniform electric fields and has been of interest for application to manipulation and separation at and below the microscale. This technique has the advantages of being noninvasive, nondestructive, and noncontact, with the movement of particle achieved by means of electric fields generated by miniaturized electrodes and microfluidic systems. A...

This paper presents a technique for measuring and quantifying the dielectrophoretic collection of sub-micron particles on planar microelectrode arrays. Fluorescence microscopy and video recording is used to measure the number of particles collecting on an electrode as a function of time for various experimental parameters, such as applied electrode voltage and frequency. Video images are proces...
متن کاملSeparation of submicrometre particles using a combination of dielectrophoretic and electrohydrodynamic forces
The controlled spatial separation of submicrometre particles by a combination of dielectrophoretic and electrohydrodynamic forces is demonstrated for the first time. Using planar microelectrode arrays, a mixture of two differently sized particles (93 nm and 216 nm diameter latex spheres) has been separated into constituent components. The particles separate into distinct bands, spatially separa...
