چکیده

U bicomp systems present exciting opportunities to do good and to make life better for diverse groups, from consumers and office workers1,2 to populations with more specialized needs, such as first responders.3 At the same time, ubicomp itself is exciting because of the interdisciplinary nature of the research and development required to exploit these opportunities. Consequently, as ubicomp educators, we can inspire our students with technically challenging and socially impactful projects and can expose them to enriching experiences where they need (or are forced) to interact with professionals from different backgrounds. Here, we make the argument for including international experiences in this already rich education and training space, reporting on our engagements on this front through two projects funded by the US National Science Foundation under the International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) program.

Ethical Issues in Ubiquitous Computing – Three Technology Assessment Studies Revisited

This paper discusses ethical issues in ubiquitous (or pervasive) computing from the perspective of the general discourse on ethics in computing, which started in the 1970s, two decades before the “ubicomp” vision emerged. The IFIP “Human Choice and Computers” conferences are used as points of reference for the general computing ethics discourse, and three technology assessment projects related ...

Moving on from Weiser's Vision of Calm Computing: Engaging UbiComp Experiences

A motivation behind much UbiComp research has been to make our lives convenient, comfortable and informed, following in the footsteps of Weiser’s calm computing vision. Three themes that have dominated are context awareness, ambient intelligence and monitoring/tracking. While these avenues of research have been fruitful their accomplishments do not match up to anything like Weiser’s world. This...

Hot toPICS In numbers, ISWC was a tremendous success. We received 101 submissions— the largest number in the last eight years—making for a selective 23 percent acceptance rate for oral presentations. Furthermore, ISWC was colocated with the ACM International Joint Conference on Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing, which merged the UbiComp and Pervasive conferences. (See this issue’s Conferences ...

B. IEEE Pervasive Computing), Konferenzen (z. B. UbiComp oder Pervasive), Sommerschulen [Midk03] und Forschungsprogramme, in denen Forscher aus den Gebieten Verteilte Systeme, Human Computer Interface, S...
