چکیده

Recently Karger proposed a new randomized algorithm for nding a minimum cut of an n-vertex graph (weighted or unweighted) with probability (n 2 ). In this paper we present a new probabilistic analysis of Karger's randomized algorithm for a few classes of unweighted graphs. For random graphs whose edges are selected with a given probability p, logn n p 1, we show that the expectation of success probability of the algorithm is ( p n ). We also investigate a class of graphs with special structure that consists of two n-cliques and (n 1) edges between the two cliques. Here is a parameter satisfying 0 < < 1 that makes these (n 1) edges a unique minimum cut. We show that the algorithm nds the unique minimum cut with probability ( n ).

Extending Karger's randomized min-cut Algorithm for a Synchronous Distributed setting

A min-cut that seperates vertices s and t in a network is an edge set of minimum weight whose removal will disconnect s and t. This problem is the dual of the well known s− t max-flow problem. Several algorithms for the min-cut problem are based on max-flow computation although the fastest known min-cut algorithms are not flow based. The well known Karger’s randomized algorithm for min-cut is a...

Lecture 2 : Karger ’ s Min Cut Algorithm

(These notes are a slightly modified version of notes from previous offerings of the class scribed by Sanjeev.) Today’s topic is simple but gorgeous: Karger’s min cut algorithm and its extension. It is a simple randomized algorithm for finding the minimum cut in a graph: a subset of vertices S in which the set of edges leaving S, denoted E(S, S) has minimum size among all subsets. You may have ...

Randomized algorithms and matrix decompositions

These notes discuss novel randomized algorithms for some tasks in numerical linear algebra, such as matrix multiplication and certain matrix decompositions (SVD, interpolative decomposition). One of the main motivations is the need for fast algorithms for the analysis of massive data. The emphasis will be more on algorithms and algorithmic tools rather than complexity or linear algebra. Randomi...

Local Flow Partitioning for Faster Edge Connectivity

We study the problem of computing a minimum cut in a simple, undirected graph and give a deterministic O(m log n log log n) time algorithm. This improves both on the best previously known deterministic running time of O(m log n) (Kawarabayashi and Thorup [12]) and the best previously known randomized running time of O(m log n) (Karger [11]) for this problem, though Karger’s algorithm can be fur...

DESIGN OF MINIMUM SEEPAGE LOSS IRRIGATION CANAL SECTIONS USING PROBABILISTIC SEARCH

To ensure efficient performance of irrigation canals, the losses from the canals need to be minimized. In this paper a modified formulation is presented to solve the optimization model for the design of different canal geometries for minimum seepage loss, in meta-heuristic environment. The complex non-linear and non-convex optimization model for canal design is solved using a probabilistic sear...
