چکیده

The GPi is a nucleus that serves as an output of the basal ganglia; a collection of nuclei which function in selecting movements to be executed. Tremor is defined as an unintentional, rhythmic, sinusoidal contraction of body parts. Currently, no scientific consensus has been reached as to where in the brain tremor arises. Using microelectrode recordings in human patients with and without tremor, we discovered a sub-population of cells that are capable of being induced into a brief theta oscillation following microstimulation. However, we found that theta burst stimulation was incapable of inducing visible tremor when microstimulating in the GPi, Vim, or STN. We also found preliminary evidence that this theta oscillation is capable of producing an LTP-like response within the GPi. We believe that this work adds strength to the “pallidocentric” view of tremor initiation which holds that the GPi is responsible for the onset of tremor.

Childhood Laryngeal Dystonia Following Bilateral Globus Pallidus Abnormality: A Case Study and Review of Literature

Introduction:Dystonia is a disorder of movement caused by various etiologies. Laryngeal dystonia is caused by the spasm of laryngeal muscles. It is a disorder caused by vocal fold movement in which excessive adduction or abduction of the vocal folds occurs during speech. The pathophysiology of this type of dystonia is not fully known. Some researchers have suggested that basal ganglia structure...

معرفی دو عضو یک خانواده مبتلا به بیماری هالروردن- اسپاتز

Hallervorden Spatz Disease is a rare neurodegenerative disorder with the prevalence of one to three per million. The onset of symptoms is usually in late childhood and early adolescence. However, some cases of the disease were reported in adulthood which could be familial or sporadic. The familial cases are autosomal-recessive resulting from mutation in the pantothenate kinase 2 gene located on...

Electrophysiological and behavioral effects of neurotensin in rat globus pallidus: an in vivo study.

The globus pallidus plays a critical role in movement regulation. Morphological study has indicated that the globus pallidus receives neurotensinergic innervation from the striatum. The present study investigated the effects of activating neurotensin receptor in globus pallidus. In vivo single unit electrophysiological recordings showed that micro-pressure ejection of neurotensin into the globu...

The comparative distribution of enkephalin, dynorphin and substance P in the human globus pallidus and basal forebrain.

Three neuropeptides, enkephalin, dynorphin, and substance P appear in the globus pallidus in a unique pattern termed woolly fibers as described previously [Haber and Nauta (1983) Neuroscience 9, 245-260]. The comparative distribution of these fibers are described in the human globus pallidus and basal forebrain area. The results show two main points: The human globus pallidus is a larger, more ...

Ultra-High Field MRI Post Mortem Structural Connectivity of the Human Subthalamic Nucleus, Substantia Nigra, and Globus Pallidus

INTRODUCTION The subthalamic nucleus, substantia nigra, and globus pallidus, three nuclei of the human basal ganglia, play an important role in motor, associative, and limbic processing. The network of the basal ganglia is generally characterized by a direct, indirect, and hyperdirect pathway. This study aims to investigate the mesoscopic nature of these connections between the subthalamic nucl...
