Younts TJ, Makani S. Neuronal integration and the depolarizing effects of axonal GABAA receptors. J Neurophysiol 106: 2105–2107, 2011. First published August 3, 2011; doi:10.1152/jn.00328.2011.— Despite their presence throughout the central nervous system, the impact of axonally expressed gamma-amino-butyric acid type-A receptors (GABAARs) on neuronal signaling is just beginning to be understood. A recently published article (Pugh JR and Jahr CE, J Neurosci 31: 565–574, 2011) tackled this important issue by investigating GABAAR-mediated function in axons of cerebellar granule cells. The results of Pugh and Jahr indicate parallel fiber GABAARs enhance neurotransmitter release probability and boost axonal and somatic excitability.

Characterization of spontaneous network-driven synaptic activity in rat hippocampal slice cultures
A particular characteristic of the neonatal hippocampus is the presence of spontaneous network-driven oscillatory events, the so-called giant depolarizing potentials (GDPs). GDPs depend on the interplay between GABA and glutamate. Early in development, GABA, acting on GABAA receptors, depolarizes neuronal membranes via a Cl- efflux. Glutamate, via AMPA receptors, generates a positive feedback n...

متن کاملSuvorexant, a dual orexin receptor antagonist, protected seizure through interaction with GABAA and glutamate receptors
Orexin can increase neuronal excitability and induce epileptic activity. In this study, the effects of suvorexant (orexin receptor antagonist) on pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) and maximal electroshock (MES)-induced seizure were investigated. Mice were divided into 5 groups of six animals each including normal saline (10 ml/kg), diazepam (2 mg/kg) and suvorexant (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg) groups. In PTZ ...
متن کاملRegulation of Action Potential Waveforms by Axonal GABAA Receptors in Cortical Pyramidal Neurons
GABAA receptors distributed in somatodendritic compartments play critical roles in regulating neuronal activities, including spike timing and firing pattern; however, the properties and functions of GABAA receptors at the axon are still poorly understood. By recording from the cut end (bleb) of the main axon trunk of layer -5 pyramidal neurons in prefrontal cortical slices, we found that curren...
