چکیده

The Karp-Rabin fingerprint of a string is a type of hash value that due to its strong properties has been used in many string algorithms. In this paper we show how to construct a data structure for a string S of size N compressed by a context-free grammar of size n that answers fingerprint queries. That is, given indices i and j, the answer to a query is the fingerprint of the substring S[i, j]. We present the first O(n) space data structures that answer fingerprint queries without decompressing any characters. For Straight Line Programs (SLP) we get O(logN) query time, and for Linear SLPs (an SLP derivative that captures LZ78 compression and its variations) we get O(log logN) query time. Hence, our data structures has the same time and space complexity as for random access in SLPs. We utilize the fingerprint data structures to solve the longest common extension problem in query time O(logN log `) and O(log ` log log `+ log logN) for SLPs and Linear SLPs, respectively. Here, ` denotes the length of the LCE.

Algorithms and data structures for grammar - compressed strings

This thesis presents new algorithms and data structures for handling data represented as grammar-compressed strings. The compression scheme we focus on is the Straight Line Program (SLP). In the following, S is an SLP of size n compressing a string S of size N . We consider the following problems. The q-gram profile of a compressed string. We present an algorithm for computing the q-gram profil...

Quantum fingerprinting.

Classical fingerprinting associates with each string a shorter string (its fingerprint), such that any two distinct strings can be distinguished with small error by comparing their fingerprints alone. The fingerprints cannot be made exponentially smaller than the original strings unless the parties preparing the fingerprints have access to correlated random sources. We show that fingerprints co...

Algorithmics on SLP-compressed strings: A survey

Results on algorithmic problems on strings that are given in a compressed form via straightline programs are surveyed. A straight-line program is a context-free grammar that generates exactly one string. In this way, exponential compression rates can be achieved. Among others, we study pattern matching for compressed strings, membership problems for compressed strings in various kinds of formal...

Definability and Compression

A compression algorithm takes a finite structure of a class K as input and produces a finite structure of a different class K’ as output. Given a property P on the class K defined in a logicL, we study the definability of property P on the class K’. We consider two compression schemas on unary ordered structures (words), compression by runlength encoding and the classical Lempel-Ziv. First-orde...
