چکیده

We propose and evaluate a new burst assembly algorithm based on the average delay of the packets comprising a burst. This method fixes the average delay of the packets belonging to an assembled burst to a desired value TAVE that may be different for each forwarding equivalence class (FEC). We show that the proposed method significantly improves the delay jitter experienced by the packets during the burst assembly process, when compared to that of timer-based and burst length-based assembly policies. Minimizing packet delay jitter is important in a number of applications, such as real-audio and streaming-video applications. We also find that the improvement in the packet delay jitter yields a corresponding significant improvement in the performance of TCP, whose operation depends critically on the ability to obtain accurate estimates of the round-trip times (RTT). c © 2007 Elsevier B.V. New Assembly Techniques for Optical Burst Switched Networks Based on Traffic Prediction

We propose new burst assembly techniques that aim at reducing the average delay experienced by the packets during the burstification process in optical burst switched (OBS) networks, for a given average size of the bursts produced. These techniques use a linear prediction filter to estimate the number of packet arrivals at the ingress node in the following interval, and launch a new burst into ...

Profiling TCP Traffic in Optical Burst Switching Networks

The efficient transmission of TCP traffic over OBS networks is a challenging problem, due to the high sensitivity of TCP congestion control mechanism to losses. In this paper, a traffic profiling scheme is proposed for gathering TCP flow statistics, which are used to estimate steady-state performance of TCP traffic over OBS networks. The burst assembly unit, in parallel to the assembly process,...

New assembly techniques and fast reservation protocols for optical burst switched networks based on traffic prediction

We propose new burst assembly schemes and fast reservation (FR) protocols for Optical Burst Switched (OBS) networks that are based on traffic prediction. The burst assembly schemes aim at minimizing (for a given burst size) the average delay of the packets incurred during the burst assembly process, while the fast reservation protocols aim at further reducing the end-to-end delay of the data bu...

QoS Control and Performance Improvement Methods for Optical Burst Switching Networks

Optical Burst Switching (OBS) has been proposed as a promising switching technology for the next generation of optical transport network. In this dissertation, we address the issue how to provide QoS control and improve performance in OBS networks. In order to provide proportional differentiated services without or with absolute constraints in bufferless OBS networks, a Dynamic Wavelength Selec...

Cross-layer Packet-dependant OFDM Scheduling Based on Proportional Fairness

This paper assumes each user has more than one queue, derives a new packet-dependant proportional fairness power allocation pattern based on the sum of weight capacity and the packet’s priority in users’ queues, and proposes 4 new cross-layer packet-dependant OFDM scheduling schemes based on proportional fairness for heterogeneous classes of traffic. Scenario 1, scenario 2 and scenario 3 lead r...
