A Stream Tapping Protocol with Partial Preloading
نویسنده
چکیده
Stream tapping–also known as patching–can reduce the bandwidth requirements of video-on-demand services by allowing new customer requests to “tap” the data streams of other requests for the same video. Previous studies have shown that stream tapping works best when the request arrival rate does not exceed ten to twenty requests per hour for a two-hour video. At higher arrival rates, it performs much worse than broadcasting

An efficient video broadcasting protocol with scalable preloading scheme
We present a new video broadcasting protocol called the scalable preloading broadcast protocol. This protocol provides cost effective access times to viewers by using a scalable preloading method. The new protocol reduces the video stream management complexity as well as the required broadcasting bandwidth. To demonstrate the benefit of new protocol, we perform various simulations to compare it...
متن کاملA Stream Tapping Protocol Involving Clients in the Distribution of Videos on Demand
We present a stream tapping protocol that involves clients in the video distribution process. As in conventional stream tapping, our protocol allows new clients to tap the most recent broadcast of the video they are watching. While conventional stream tapping required the server to send to these clients the part of the video they missed, our protocol delegates this task to the clients that are ...
متن کاملA Broadcasting Protocol for Video-on-Demand Using Optional Partial Preloading
Broadcasting protocols for video-on-demand normally require customers to wait for a few minutes before starting to watch the video of their choice. The easiest way to avoid this delay is to preload in each customer settop-box the first few minutes of each video. We present here a broadcasting protocol making this requirement optional: customers are offered the option of preloading the first few...
متن کاملA Dynamic Heuristic Broadcasting Protocol for Video-on-Demand
Most existing distribution protocols for video-ondemand are tailored for a specific range of video access rates and perform poorly beyond that range. We present a dynamic heuristic broadcasting protocol that performs as well as stream tapping with unlimited extra tapping at low video access rates and has the same average bandwidth requirements as the best existing broadcasting protocols at high...
متن کاملA Reactive Broadcasting Protocol for Video on Demand
Broadcasting can reduce the cost of video on demand services by distributing in a more efficient fashion videos that are simultaneously watched by many viewers. Rather than waiting for individual requests, broadcasting schedules repeated broadcasts of the various segments of a video ahead of time. Hence it performs best when it is used to distribute videos that are watched concurrently by hundr...
