Dependence of fast-ion transport on the nature of the turbulence in the Large Plasma Device

چکیده
Strong turbulent waves (dn=n 0.5, f 5-40 kHz) are observed in the upgraded Large Plasma Device [W. Gekelman, H. Pfister, Z. Lucky, J. Bamber, D. Leneman, and J. Maggs, Rev. Sci. Instrum. 62, 2875 (1991)] on density gradients produced by an annular obstacle. Energetic lithium ions (Efast= Ti 300, qfast=qs 10) orbit through the turbulent region. Scans with a collimated analyzer and with probes give detailed profiles of the fast ion spatial distribution and of the fluctuating wave fields. The characteristics of the fluctuations are modified by changing the plasma species from helium to neon and by modifying the bias on the obstacle. Different spatial structure sizes (Ls) and correlation lengths (Lcorr) of the wave potential fields alter the fast ion transport. The effects of electrostatic fluctuations are reduced due to gyro-averaging, which explains the difference in the fast-ion transport. A transition from super-diffusive to sub-diffusive transport is observed when the fast ion interacts with the waves for most of a wave period, which agrees with theoretical predictions. متن کاملDamage studies on irradiated tungsten by helium and argon ions in a plasma focus device
Damage of tungsten due to helium and argon ions of a PF device was studied. Tungsten samples were irradiated by 20 shots of the plasma focus device with argon and helium as working gases, separately. The tungsten surface was analyzed by SEM, before and after irradiation. SEM revealed dense blisters with diameters of a few hundred nanometers, on the samples which were irradiated by helium ions, ...

In this study, some characteristics of a Mather type Plasma Focus (PF) device such as a discharge current, pinch time, ion flux and hard x-ray intensity has been investigated simultaneously in argon and nitrogen gases separately for various operating gas pressures and charging voltages of capacitor bank. It was observed that pinch phenomena was energy and pressure dependent in current sheath as...
متن کاملInvestigation of fast ion transport in TORPEX
Basic aspects of fast ion transport in ideal interchange-mode unstable plasmas are investigated in the simple toroidal plasma device TORPEX. Fast ions are generated by a miniaturized lithium 6+ ion source with energies up to 1 keV, and are detected using a double-gridded energy analyzer mounted on a two-dimensional movable system in the poloidal cross-section. The signal-to-noise ratio is enhan...

Abstract: This paper has been prepared by using experimental and simulated data due to a large and a small Filippov type plasma focus devices. In the first part of the paper, the plasma-focusing phenomenon is introduced and the parameters of the devices are presented. Then the results of empirical studies of the pinch-time dependence to the gas pressure are provided. In the next part, the theor...
