چکیده

Cooperation has been widely studied in the context of evolutionary games on graphs. Usually the players are set on the nodes of a network and adopt the same strategy, cooperation or defection, against all of their neighbors. In heterogeneous networks, it was shown that cooperation is highly sustained, although when the cumulative payoff is normalized by the connectivity, the cooperation is severely weakened. Here, we study the evolution of cooperation in heterogeneous networks when it is possible to adopt different strategies against different opponents. We study numerically different types of heterogeneous networks, including scale-free networks, that differ in the extent of the role of the highly connected nodes, usually called hubs. The remarkable result is that cooperation is maintained irrespective of whether the payoff is the total one or the normalized one, and, in spite of such blindness, we still find that the topology has a strong effect. When the presence of the hubs is more prominent, we find that the cooperation level decreases for synchronous update but remains almost unchanged for the asynchronous update. It is also shown that cooperation is robust against errors in the update rule. PACS numbers: 89.65.−s, 87.23.−n, 02.50.Le

Making new connections towards cooperation in the prisoner's dilemma game

Evolution of cooperation in the prisoner’s dilemma game is studied where initially all players are linked via a regular graph, having four neighbors each. Simultaneously with the strategy evolution, players are allowed to make new connections and thus permanently extend their neighborhoods, provided they have been successful in passing their strategy to the opponents. We show that this simple c...

Gravitational Search Algorithm to Solve the K-of-N Lifetime Problem in Two-Tiered WSNs

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are networks of autonomous nodes used for monitoring an environment. In designing WSNs, one of the main issues is limited energy source for each sensor node. Hence, offering ways to optimize energy consumption in WSNs which eventually increases the network lifetime is strongly felt. Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) is a novel stochastic population-based meta-...

Playing against the fittest: A simple strategy that promotes the emergence of cooperation

Understanding the emergence and sustainability of cooperation is a fundamental problem in evolutionary biology and is frequently studied by the framework of evolutionary game theory. A very powerful mechanism to promote cooperation is network reciprocity, where the interaction patterns and opportunities for strategy spread of agents are constrained to limited sets of permanent interactions part...

Ju l 2 00 8 Participation costs dismiss the advantage of heterogeneous networks in evolution of cooperation

Real social interactions occur on networks in which each individual is connected to some, but not all, of others. In social dilemma games with a fixed population size, heterogeneity in the number of contacts per player is known to promote evolution of cooperation. Under a common assumption of positively biased payoff structure, well-connected players earn much by playing frequently, and coopera...

Heterogeneous Networks in Evolution of Cooperation

Real social interactions occur on networks in which each individual is connected to some, but not all, of others. In social dilemma games with a fixed population size, heterogeneity in the number of contacts per player is known to promote evolution of cooperation. An essential assumption underlying this phenomenon is positively biased payoff structure so that more connected players earn more by...
