Models of Galaxies with Central Black Holes: Simulation Methods

چکیده
We present a method for simulating numerically the eeect of the adiabatic growth of black holes on the structure of elliptical galaxies. Using a parallel self{consistent eld code, we add black holes to N{body realizations of model distribution functions for spherical galaxies, using a continuous mass{spectrum. The variable particle mass, combined with a simple multiple timestep integration scheme, makes it possible to evolve the models for many dynamical times with N 10 6 10 8 , allowing high spatial and mass resolution. This paper discusses veriication of the code using analytic models for spherical galaxies, comparing our numerical results of the eeect of central black holes on the structure of the galaxies with previously published models. The intrinsic and projected properties of the nal particle distribution, including higher order moments of the velocity distribution, permit comparison with observed characteristics of real galaxies, and constrain the masses of any central black holes present in those galaxies. Our technique is promising and is easily extended to axisymmetric and triaxial galaxies.

Adiabatic Growth of Massive Black Holes
We discuss the process of adiabatic growth of central black holes in the presence of a stationary, pre-existing distribution of collisionless stars. Within the limitations of the assumptions, the resulting models make robust physical predictions for the presence of a central cusp in the stellar and dark matter density, a Keplerian rise in the velocity dispersion, and a significant tangential po...
متن کاملGalactic Mergers with Supermassive Black Holes
We present the results of N -body simulations of the accretion of high-density dwarf galaxies by low-density giant galaxies. Both galaxies contain power-law central density cusps and point masses representing supermassive black holes; the ratio of galaxy masses is 3 : 1. The cusp of the dwarf galaxy is always disrupted during the merger, leading to a remnant with a weak power law in the intrins...
متن کاملModeling feedback from stars and black holes in galaxy mergers
We describe techniques for incorporating feedback from star formation and black hole accretion into simulations of isolated and merging galaxies. At present, the details of these processes cannot be resolved in simulations on galactic scales. Our basic approach therefore involves forming coarse-grained representations of the properties of the interstellar medium and black hole accretion startin...
متن کاملNuclear Cusps and Cores in Early-type Galaxies as Relics of Binary Black Hole Mergers
We present an analysis of the central cusp slopes and core parameters of early-type galaxies using a large database of surface brightness profiles obtained from Hubble Space Telescope observations. We examine the relation between the central cusp slopes, core parameters, and black hole masses in early-type galaxies, in light of two models that attempt to explain the formation of cores and densi...
متن کاملWhy are AGN found in High Mass Galaxies?
We use semi-analytic models implemented in the Millennium Simulation to analyze the merging histories of dark matter haloes and of the galaxies that reside in them. We assume that supermassive black holes only exist in galaxies that have experienced at least one major merger. Only a few percent of galaxies with stellar masses less than M∗ < 10 10M⊙ are predicted to have experienced a major merg...
