چکیده

in the 2-week-old rats, ascorbic acid either performs additional functions or performs the same functions as in the other two groups but at accelerated rates. Since the bone marrow is predominantly engaged in the production of blood cells, it is possible that some relationship may exist between the rate of production of blood cells and the quantity of ascorbic acid available to the bone marrow. The concentrations of ascorbic acid in the various organs show a general decrease with age. The liver, which is mainly responsible for its synthesis, also shows a lower concentration of ascorbic acid: this may be due to a decrease in the activities of the enzymes which synthesize it. This may result in lower concentrations in other organs also. The reason for its lower concentration in the liver of older guinea pigs and in the blood cells of older men (Mourhouse & Guerrant, 1952; Kirk & Chieffi, 1953) kept on a normal ascorbic acid diet is not known. Our studies on the rat show that this lower concentration in the organs may be due either to a decrease in its rate of synthesis in the liver or to a decreased rate of its uptake by the organs.

The occurrence of polythionates as intermediates in the metabolism of thiosulphate by the thiobacilli.

Further evidence for the inclusion of polythionates in the pathway of thiosulphate oxidation by members of the genus Thiobacillus is presented. Manometric experiments showed tetrathionate oxidation to be a stage in thiosulphate oxidation by suspensions of T. thioparus and T. thiocyanoxidans. Thiobltcillus thioparus accumulated a sufficient concentration of polythionate in the medium to allow ch...

The oxidation of thiosulfate and phosphorylation in extracts of Thiobacillus thioparus.

Thiobmillus thioparus is an autotrophic microorganism that obtains the energy required for growth by the oxidation of reduced inorganic sulfur compounds to sulfate. When it is grown on high concentrations of thiosulfate, the organism accumulates elemental sulfur and produces sulfate. The pathway of thiosulfate oxidation has been essentially unknown; however, it has been postulated that tetrathi...

Sulfur formation by steady-state continuous cultures of a sulfoxidizing consortium and Thiobacillus thioparus ATCC 23645.

The elemental sulfur formation by the partial oxidation of thiosulfate by both a sulfoxidizing consortium and by Thiobacillus thioparus ATCC 23645 was studied under aerobic conditions in chemostat. Steady state was attained with essentially total conversion to sulfate when the dissolved oxygen concentration was 5 mgO2 l(-1) and below a dilution rate (D) of 3.0 d(-1)for the consortium and 0.9 d(...

Reduced sulfur compound oxidation by Thiobacillus caldus.

The oxidation of reduced inorganic sulfur compounds was studied by using resting cells of the moderate thermophile Thiobacillus caldus strain KU. The oxygen consumption rate and total oxygen consumed were determined for the reduced sulfur compounds thiosulfate, tetrathionate, sulfur, sulfide, and sulfite in the absence and in the presence of inhibitors and uncouplers. The uncouplers 2,4-dinitro...

01” Studies on the Mechanism of Sulfate Formation and Phosphorylation in Extracts of Thiobadlus thioparus

The chemoautotropic microorganism Thiobacillus thioparus requires orthophosphate or arsenate for the complete oxidation of thiosulfate to sulfate (1). This observation has been further extended by Santer (2), who observed that during the oxidation of thiosulfate by intact cells of this organism, 0’8 is transferred from orthophosphate to the sulfate formed during the oxidation. This transfer was...
