(In)approximability Results for Pattern Matching Problems

چکیده
We consider the approximability of three recently introduced pattern matching problems which have been shown to be NP-hard. Given two strings as input, the first problem is to find the longest common parameterised subsequence between two strings. The second is a maximisation variant of generalised function matching and the third is a a maximisation variant of generalised parameterised matching. We show that in all three cases there exists an ǫ > 0 such that there is no polynomial time (1 − ǫ)-approximation algorithm, unless P = NP. We then present a polynomial time √ 1/OPT -approximation algorithm for a variant of generalised parameterised matching for which no previous approximation results are known.

On Complexity and Approximability of the Labeled Maximum/Perfect Matching Problems
In this paper, we deal with both the complexity and the approximability of the labeled perfect matching problem in bipartite graphs. Given a simple graph G = (V, E) with n vertices with a color (or label) function L : E → {c1, . . . , cq}, the labeled maximum matching problem consists in finding a maximum matching on G that uses a minimum or a maximum number of colors.
متن کاملOn Capacitated Set Cover Problems
Recently, Chakrabarty et al. [5] initiated a systematic study of capacitated set cover problems, and considered the question of how their approximability relates to that of the uncapacitated problem on the same underlying set system. Here, we investigate this connection further and give several results, both positive and negative. In particular, we show that if the underlying set system satisfi...
متن کاملApproximability results for stable marriage problems with ties
We consider instances of the classical stable marriage problem in which persons may include ties in their preference lists. We show that, in such a setting, strong lower bounds hold for the approximability of each of the problems of finding an egalitarian, minimum regret and sex-equal stable matching. We also consider stable marriage instances in which persons may express unacceptable partners ...
متن کاملOn Approximability of the Independent/Connected Edge Dominating Set Problems
We investigate polynomial-time approximability of the problems related to edge dominating sets of graphs. When edges are unit-weighted, the edge dominating set problem is polynomially equivalent to the minimum maximal matching problem, in either exact or approximate computation, and the former problem was recently found to be approximable within a factor of 2 even with arbitrary weights. It wil...
متن کاملOn Approximation Hardness of the Minimum 2SAT-DELETION Problem
The Minimum 2SAT-Deletion problem is to delete the minimum number of clauses in a 2SAT instance to make it satisfiable. It is one of the prototypes in the approximability hierarchy of minimization problems [8], and its approximability is largely open. We prove a lower approximation bound of 8 √ 5 − 15 ≈ 2.88854, improving the previous bound of 10 √ 5 − 21 ≈ 1.36067 by Dinur and Safra [5]. For h...
