چکیده

Almost all time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) calculations of excited states make use of the adiabatic approximation, which implies a frequency-independent exchange-correlation kernel that limits applications to one-hole/one-particle states. To remedy this problem, Maitra et al. [N.T. Maitra, F. Zhang, R.J. Cave, K. Burke, Double excitations within time-dependent density functional theory linear response theory, J. Chem. Phys. 120 (2004) 5932 ] proposed dressed TDDFT (D-TDDFT), which includes explicit two-hole/two-particle states by adding a frequency-dependent term to adiabatic TDDFT. This paper offers the first extensive test of D-TDDFT, and its ability to represent excitation energies in a general fashion. We present D-TDDFT excited states for 28 chromophores and compare themwith the benchmark results of Schreiber et al. [M. Schreiber, M.R. Silva-Junior, S.P.A. Sauer, W. Thiel, Benchmarks for electronically excited states: CASPT2, CC2, CCSD, and CC3, J. Chem. Phys. 128 (2008) 134110]. We find the choice of functional used for the A-TDDFT step to be critical for positioning the 1h1p states with respect to the 2h2p states. We observe that D-TDDFT without HF exchange increases the error in excitations already underestimated by A-TDDFT. This problem is largely remedied by implementation of D-TDDFT including Hartree–Fock exchange. 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Applying Density Functional Theory to Study NLO Properties of Benzyne-Based Chromophores

Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were employed to investigate the structural characteristics, electronic properties, and nonlinear optical properties of Benzyne-Based Chromophores at B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level. The effects on the hyperpolarizabilities of various donor and acceptor substituent (H, F, Cl, Br, Me, NH2, OH, NH3+, COOH, CHO, CN, NO,NO2 ) were studied. The results reveale...

Electronic Excitations in Pyrrole: A Test Case for Determinationof Chromophores in the Chromogenic Effects of NeurotoxicHydrocarbons by Time-Dependent Density Functional Theoryand Single-Excitation Configuration Interaction Methods

Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and single-excitation configuration interaction (CIS) calculations on the electronic excitations in pyrrole have been performed to examine the reliability of these first-principles electronic structure methods in predicting electronic excitation spectra of pyrrole-containing compounds. Both the TD-DFT and CIS calculations led to satisfactory res...

A dressed TDDFT treatment of the 2Ag states of butadiene and hexatriene

The nature and energetics of the low-lying singlet states of polyenes have presented significant challenges for electronic structure methods. This is particularly true for conventional implementations of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), which, because of their use of the adiabatic approximation, have difficulty in describing states of ‘doubly-excited character’. We show that us...

Time-dependent density functional theoretical study of low lying excited states of F2

The utility of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) in predicting excitation energies is tested for the low lying excited states of F2, a system that has posed severe challenges to ab initio quantum theory. It is shown that TDDFT using B3LYP functional predicts the excitation energies in good agreement with experiment. In some cases, the agreement is better than that for the post-Ha...
