چکیده

THERE has long been a need in ophthalmology for a pleasant, non-irritant, safe and effective local analgesic, free from such side-effects as pupil dilatation or cycloplegia. The compounds in common use to-day, such as cocaine 4 per cent. (D.D.A.), affect the pupil and desiccate the cornea, and amethocaine (Pantocain, Pontocaine, Tetracain) and related compound amylocaine (Dorsacaine, Phenolaine) and Benzamine (Eucaine) cause stinging, irritation, blepharospasm, and conjunctival congestion. Novesine (Wander), which has a formula similar to " Ophthaine", has proved excellent for tonometry, but not so successful for tonography or gonioscopy, and also has the disadvantage of stinging on application. Ophthaine underwent extensive trials in the United States in the years 1950-55, and for the past 3 years has been in regular clinical use by several colleagues and myself. During this period not a single case of sensitivity has occurred, and the drug has proved to be the most satisfactory all-round analgesic available.

SIRS-There has been widespread interest in this local anaesthetic since a paper appeared in the February issue of the British Journal of Ophthalmology (1964, 48, 102). Although popular in the United States, for some reason its efficiency had been overlooked in the United Kingdom. However, it is necessary to clarify a point of ambiguity in relation to amylocaine mentioned in the paper. This drug...

METHODS A national postal survey was conducted in 2008, asking all consultant ophth...

Teaching corner: Regional anaesthesia for ophthalmic surgery.

Performing safe and effective regional anaesthesia for ophthalmic surgery is an important skill for anaesthetic and ophthalmologic practitioners. Akinetic sharp-needle blocks are generally safe but rare, sight and life threatening complications occur. Sub-Tenon's block using a blunt canula provides akinesa and is a safer alternative but serious complications have been reported. This review prov...

PHARMACOLOGICAL STUDIES ON NOVEL BASIC AMINOALKYL ARYL ETHERS AS POTENTIAL LOCAL ANAESTHETICS

Following our previous investigations on certain new aminoalkyl aryl ethers, which showed promising and outstanding local anaesthetic properties, the local anaesthetic activity and duration of action of a further selection of four novel derivatives of the above-mentioned series, used as hydrochloride salts, have been determined by the ill vivo rat sciatic nerve test. These are: N,N-dimethyl...

Development of novel potentiometric sensors for determination of lidocaine hydrochloride in pharmaceutical preparations, serum and urine samples

This article is focused on the determination of lidocaine hydrochloride as a local anaesthetic drug. A potentiometric method based on modified screen-printed and modified carbon paste ion-selective electrodes was described for the determination of lidocaine hydrochloride in different pharmaceutical preparations. It was based on potentiometric titration of lidocaine hydrochloride using modified ...
