Binary Composition Tree Hardware: A Scalable Solution for Real-Time Volume Rendering
نویسندگان
چکیده
Recent advances in PC graphics hardware like the VolumePro 500-2X and GeForce 3 have resulted in remarkable volume rendering performance. However, the limited amount of video memory found on a single card prohibits its use in large-scale volume graphics applications. The trend has thus been to make use of the combined rendering power and storage capacity of multiple graphics cards to achieve interactive rendering of large volume data. Such a parallel rendering approach typically requires a final image compositing step, which if done in software, can quickly become a bottleneck of the overall rendering performance as more cards are used. In this paper, we present the design of Binary Composition Tree Hardware (BCTH), its integration into a Volume Graphics (VG) cluster prototype equipped with both VolumePro 500-2X and GeForce 3 cards, and test results using large medical volume data sets. Our test results show that BCTH makes cluster rendering a viable approach to the large scale volume rendering problem.

A Scalable Architecture for Volume Rendering
We describe the operational principles of a scalable hardware accelerator for volume rendering. The basic philosophy is to provide an atomic unit which already provides sophisticated volume graphics at interactive rendering speed. Realtime speed can then be achieved by operating multiple units in par allel. The basic unit consists of just four VLSI chips and the volume memory and thus meets th...

متن کاملReal-Time Shadow Generation Using BSP Trees and Stencil Buffers
This paper describes a real-time shadow generation algorithm for polygonal environments illuminated by movable point light sources. The main goal is to quickly reduce the number of hidden shadow volumes, by using a technique of volumetric shadow rendering using stencil buffers with a modified BSP tree, i.e. a simplified version of a SVBSP (Shadow Volume BSP) tree. It also provides new easy-to-i...
متن کاملAdaptive and Scalable Load Balancing Scheme for Sort-Last Parallel Volume Rendering on GPU Clusters
Sort-last parallel rendering using a cluster of GPUs has been widely used as an efficient method for visualizing large-scale volume datasets. The performance of this method is constrained by load balancing when data parallelism is included. In previous works static partitioning could lead to self-balance when only task level parallelism is included. In this paper, we present a load balancing sc...

We present a scalable volume rendering technique that exploits lossy compression and low-cost commodity hardware to permit highly interactive exploration of time-varying scalar volume data. A palette-based decoding technique and an adaptive bit allocation scheme are developed to fully utilize the texturing capability of a commodity 3-D graphics card. Using a single PC equipped with a modest amo...
