On Miniaturized Problems in Parameterized Complexity Theory

چکیده
We introduce a general notion of miniaturization of a problem that comprises the different miniaturizations of concrete problems considered so far. We develop parts of the basic theory of miniaturizations. Using the appropriate logical formalism, we show that the miniaturization of a definable problem in W[t] lies in W[t], too. In particular, the miniaturization of the dominating set problem is in W[2]. Furthermore we investigate the relation between f(k) · n time and subexponential time algorithms for the dominating set problem and for the clique problem.

We exhibit a close connection between parameterized complexity theory and logic. Our approach is that of descriptive complexity theory. We study the definability of parameterized problems and try to obtain information about the parameterized complexity of the problems through the syntactical structure of the defining sentences. On the one hand, we use this approach to prove that certain problem...
متن کاملOn the Space Complexity of Parameterized Problems
Parameterized complexity theory measures the complexity of computational problems predominantly in terms of their parameterized time complexity. The purpose of the present paper is to demonstrate that the study of parameterized space complexity can give new insights into the complexity of well-studied parameterized problems like the feedback vertex set problem. We show that the undirected and t...
متن کاملContributions to Parameterized Complexity
This thesis is presented in two parts. In Part One we concentrate on algorithmic aspects of parameterized complexity. We explore ways in which the concepts and algorithmic techniques of parameterized complexity can be fruitfully brought to bear on a (classically) well-studied problem area, that of scheduling problems modelled on partial orderings. We develop efficient and constructive algorithm...
متن کاملDescribing Parameterized Complexity Classes
We describe parameterized complexity classes by means of classical complexity theory and descriptive complexity theory. For every classical complexity class we introduce a parameterized analogue in a natural way. In particular, the analogue of polynomial time is the class of all fixed-parameter tractable problems. We develop a basic complexity theory for the parameterized analogues of classical...
متن کاملOn Parameterized Intractability: Hardness and Completeness
We study the theory and techniques developed in the research of parameterized intractability, emphasizing on parameterized hardness and completeness that imply (stronger) computational lower bounds for natural computational problems. Moreover, the fundamentals of the structural properties in parameterized complexity theory, relationships to classical complexity theory and more recent developmen...
