Processing Russian inflectional morphology: a PET study of verb generation
نویسندگان
چکیده
For many years, acquisition of verbal morphology has been an issue of much debate within linguistic theory, research on first and second language acquisition, mental grammar representation, and cognitive processing. The proponents of the Dual Mechanism account claim that regularly inflected forms are computed by a ruleprocessing system, while morphologically irregular forms are processed in associative memory. The opposite Single Mechanism account claims that both regular and irregular forms are processed in associative memory. In the present PET study significant rCBF increase in the anterior cingulate gyrus of the left hemisphere (24 BA) was shown for regular verb generation. This may support the rule-based (de)compositional account.

Symbolic rule versus analogy in the processing of complex verbal morphology
This paper will challenge the simple notion of analogy, which relies entirely on phonological associations, and the assumption that frequency effects are incompatible with symbolic rules as they are applied in research on morphological processing. It will propose and test against the experimental data the Rules and Probabilities Model of the processing of complex inflectional morphology, which ...
متن کاملNonnative Processing of Verbal Morphology: In Search of Regularity
There is little agreement on the mechanisms involved in second language (L2) processing of regular and irregular inflectional morphology and on the exact role of age, amount, and type of exposure to L2 resulting in differences in L2 input and use. The article contributes to the ongoing debates by reporting the results of two experiments on Russian verb generation and recognition in a lexical de...
متن کاملActivating Verb Semantics from the Regular and Irregular Past Tense
Theoretical accounts of the processing of inflectional morphology make implicit, untested assumptions about the activation of verb semantics from inflected verbs. This research used semantic priming to investigate the extent to which regular and irregular past tense forms activate verb semantics, in comparison to the verb stem. The results show that past tense forms activate verb semantics to t...
متن کاملPast-tense Generation from Form versus Meaning: Behavioural Data and Simulation Evidence.
The standard task used to study inflectional processing of verbs involves presentation of the stem form from which the participant is asked to generate the past tense. This task reveals a processing disadvantage for irregular relative to regular English verbs, more pronounced for lower-frequency items. Dual- and single-mechanism theories of inflectional morphology are both able to account for t...
متن کاملDissociative neural correlates of semantic processing of nouns and verbs in Chinese - A language with minimal inflectional morphology
Numerous studies using various techniques and methodologies have demonstrated distinctive responses to nouns and verbs both at the behavioral and neurological levels. However, since the great majority of these studies involved tasks employing pictorial stimuli and languages with rich inflectional morphology, it is not clear whether word class effects resulted from semantic differences between o...
