Electrohydrostatic wetting of poorly-conducting liquids
نویسنده
چکیده
The wetting behavior of poorly conducting fluids between two parallel conducting plates is studied, both, theoretically and experimentally. In the absence of an applied potential, the interface shape and height are determined by gravity and parameterized using the Bond number. In the presence of an electric field at sufficiently high values on the order of (1 kV/mm), there is modification of the interfacial stresses and liquid level. Here we measure the liquid level height as a function of the hydrostatic and electric Bond numbers. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Theoretical foundation of Zisman’s empirical equation for wetting of liquids on solid surfaces
Theories of wetting of liquids on solid surfaces under the condition that van der Waals force is dominant are briefly reviewed. We show theoretically that Zisman’s empirical equation for wetting of liquids on solid surfaces is a linear approximation of the Young–van der Waals equation in the wetting region, and we express the two parameters in Zisman’s empirical equation in terms of the dielect...
متن کاملFrom rolling ball to complete wetting: the dynamic tuning of liquids on nanostructured surfaces.
In this work, for the first time, a dynamic electrical control of the wetting behavior of liquids on nanostructured surfaces, which spans the entire possible range from the superhydrophobic behavior to nearly complete wetting, has been demonstrated. Moreover, this kind of dynamic control was obtained at voltages as low as 22 V. We have demonstrated that the liquid droplet on a nanostructured su...
متن کاملCombinatorial wetting in colour: an optofluidic nose.
We present a colourimetric litmus test for simple differentiation of organic liquids based on wetting, which achieves chemical specificity without a significant sacrifice in portability or ease-of-use. Chemical specificity is derived from the combination of colourimetric wetting patterns produced by liquids in an array of inverse opal films, each having a graded wettability, but using different...
متن کاملEmpirical Evidence for Roughness-Dependent Limit in Observation of Odd-Even Effect in Wetting Properties of Polar Liquids on n-Alkanethiolate Self-Assembled Monolayers.
Substrate roughness influences the wetting properties of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), but details on this dependency at the sub-nanometer level are still lacking. This study investigates the effect of surface roughness on interfacial properties of n-alkanethiolate SAMs, specifically wetting, and confirms the predicted limit to the observation of the odd-even effect in hydrophobicity. This ...
متن کاملWetting in Color: From photonic fingerprinting of liquids to optical control of liquid percolation
We provide an overview of our recent advances in the manipulation of wetting in inverse-opal photonic crystals. Exploiting photonic crystals with spatially patterned surface chemistry to confine the infiltration of fluids to liquidspecific spatial patterns, we developed a highly selective scheme for colorimetry, where organic liquids are distinguished based on wetting. The high selectivity of w...
