THE INFLUENCE OF GENDER AND AGING ON THE NEURAL CIRCUITRYSUPPORING FACIAL EMOTION PROCESSING IN ADULTS WITH MAJORDEPRESSIVE DISORDERbyEMILY MARIE BRICEÑOAugust 2013Advisor:Dr. Lisa Jane RapportMajor:Psychology (Clinical)Degree:Doctor of PhilosophyMajor Depressive Disorder (MDD) is associated with decrements in facial emotionprocessing (FEP). Previous studies investigating the neural substrates of these decrements haveoften reported hyperactivity of emotion processing circuitry. Neural circuitry supporting FEP hasbeen shown to be different between healthy men and women, and between young and elderadults. However, no prior studies have investigated how gender and aging affect emotionprocessing circuitry in individuals with MDD. The present study aimed to investigate theinfluence of gender and aging on emotion processing circuitry in MDD. One hundred-ten adults, grouped into subgroups according to MDD status, gender, and age group, completed a facialemotion processing task (FEPT) while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Interactions were revealed between MDD status, gender, and age group in a number ofbrain regions important to emotion processing. These regions included the inferior, middle, andsuperior frontal gyrus, cingulate, and putamen. Within younger adults, women with MDD exhibited hyperactivation of these regions compared to healthy control (HC) women, consistent with prior research. Young men with MDD, however, exhibited hypoactivity of these same

Age and gender modulate the neural circuitry supporting facial emotion processing in adults with major depressive disorder.

OBJECTIVES Emotion processing, supported by frontolimbic circuitry known to be sensitive to the effects of aging, is a relatively understudied cognitive-emotional domain in geriatric depression. Some evidence suggests that the neurophysiological disruption observed in emotion processing among adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) may be modulated by both gender and age. Therefore, the pre...

Early Posterior Negativity as Facial Emotion Recognition Index in Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Introduction: Studies indicate that children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have deficits in social and emotional functions. It can be hypothesized that these children have some deficits in early stages of facial emotion discrimination. Based on this hypothesis, the present study investigated neural correlates of early visual processing during emotional face recognition in...

Gender-specific disruptions in emotion processing in younger adults with depression.

BACKGROUND One of the principal theories regarding the biological basis of major depressive disorder (MDD) implicates a dysregulation of emotion-processing circuitry. Gender differences in how emotions are processed and relative experience with emotion processing might help to explain some of the disparities in the prevalence of MDD between women and men. This study sought to explore how gender...
