چکیده

Experimental methods for the measurement of intrinsic interactions between moving dislocations and the crystal lattice are considered. It is emphasized that the stress pulse method is applicable at stress levels greater than about twice the static flow stress, while internal friction experiments may be used to explore the interaction at very low stress levels and small dislocation velocities. Recent results of low temperature stress pulse measurements in Cu are presented. The interactions deduced from measurements between 4. 2°K and 400°K in some FCC metals are compared to theoretical predictions. Suggestions are made for future theoretical and experimental work on unresolved aspects of the intrinsic interactions. >!<This work was supported by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission

Heat conduction in low-dimensional quantum magnets

Transport properties provide important information about the mobility, elastic and inelastic of scattering of excitations in solids. Heat transport is well understood for phonons and electrons, but little is known about heat transport by magnetic excitations. Very recently, large and unusual magnetic heat conductivities were discovered in low-dimensional quantum magnets. This article summarizes...

Phonon-mediated electron transport through CaO thin films.

Scanning tunneling microscopy has developed into a powerful tool for the characterization of conductive surfaces, for which the overlap of tip and sample wave functions determines the image contrast. On insulating layers, as the CaO thin film grown on Mo(001) investigated here, direct overlap between initial and final states is not enabled anymore and electrons are transported via hopping throu...

Measurement of the frequency-dependent conductivity in sapphire.

Electron transport of photoexcited single-crystal sapphire (alpha-Al2O3) is characterized by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. The complex conductivity displays a Drude-type frequency dependence, which yields carrier scattering rates and densities. Carrier scattering is dominated by interactions with acoustical and optical phonons at low and high temperatures, respectively, and follows Matthi...
