Tunneling between two-dimensional electron gases in a strong magnetic field.

چکیده
We have measured the tunneling between two two-dimensional electron gases at high magnetic fields B, when the carrier densities of the two electron layers are matched. For filling factors ν < 1, there is a gap in the current-voltage characteristics centered about V = 0, followed by a tunneling peak at ∼ 6 mV. Both features have been observed before and have been attributed to electron-electron interactions within a layer. We have measured high field tunneling peak positions and fitted gap parameters that are proportional to B, and independent of the carrier densities of the two layers. This suggests a different origin for the gap to that proposed by current theories, which predict a √ B dependence.

Tunneling between parallel two-dimensional electron gases.
The tunneling between two parallel two-dimensional electron gases has been investigated as a function of temperature T , carrier density n, and the applied perpendicular magnetic field B. In zero magnetic field the equilibrium resonant lineshape is Lorentzian, reflecting the Lorentzian form of the spectral functions within each layer. From the width of the tunneling resonance the lifetime of th...
متن کاملTunneling from a correlated two-dimensional electron system transverse to a magnetic field
We show that in a magnetic field parallel to a two-dimensional ~2D! electron layer, strong electron correlations can change the rate of tunneling from the layer to the 3D continuum exponentially. It leads to a specific density dependence of the escape rate. The mechanism is a dynamical Mössbauer-type recoil, in which the Hall momentum of the tunneling electron is partly transferred to the whole...
متن کاملTunneling into a two-dimensional electron system in a strong magnetic field.
We investigate the properties of the one-electron Green’s function in an interacting two-dimensional electron system in a strong magnetic field, which describes an electron tunneling into such a system. From finite-size diagonalization, we find that its spectral weight is suppressed near zero energy, reaches a maximum at an energy of about 0.2e/ǫlc, and decays exponentially at higher energies. ...
متن کاملTunneling conductance between parallel two-dimensional electron systems.
We derive and evaluate expressions for the low temperature dc equilibrium tunneling conductance between parallel two-dimensional electron systems. Our theory is based on a linear-response formalism and on impurity-averaged perturbation theory. The disorder broadening of features in the dependence of tunneling conductance on sheet densities and in-plane magnetic field strengths is influenced bot...
متن کاملCalculation of Quasi-one-dimensional Interacting Electron Gas Using the Hartree-Fock Method
In this paper, the Hartree-Fock method has been formulated to investigate some of the ground state properties of quasi-one-dimensional interacting electron gas in the presence of the magnetic field. The bare coulomb interaction between electrons has been assumed. For this system, we have also computed some of its thermodynamic and magnetic properties such as the energy, pressure, incompressibil...
