چکیده

This paper presents new touch-screen collaborative music interaction for people with dementia. The authors argue that dementia technology has yet to focus on collaborative multiuser group musical interactions. The project aims to contribute to dementia care while addressing a significant gap in current literature. Two trials explore contrasting musical scenarios: the performance of abstract electronic music and the distributed performance of J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations. Findings presented in this paper demonstrate that people with dementia can successfully perform and engage in collaborative music performance activities with little or no scaffolded instruction. Further findings suggest that people with dementia can develop and retain musical performance skills over time. This paper proposes a number of guidelines and design solutions.

Microjam: an app for sharing tiny touch-screen performances

MicroJam is a mobile app for sharing tiny touch-screen performances. Mobile applications that streamline creativity and social interaction have enabled a very broad audience to develop their own creative practices. While these apps have been very successful in visual arts (particularly photography), the idea of social music-making has not had such a broad impact. MicroJam includes several novel...

Evaluation of a Music Intervention on Well-being and Behavior of People with Dementia Using Dementia Care Mapping

Introduction: Dementia Care Mapping (DCM) was originally developed as an observation tool to examine person-centered care in long-term care facilities and to evaluate the quality of life and well-being of people with dementia (PwD). However, the effects of a music intervention using this tool have not been investigated so far. This leads to the following research question: How does a music inte...

Kinetic Particles Synthesizer Using Multi-Touch Screen Interface of Mobile Devices

We developed a kinetic particles synthesizer for mobile devices having a multi-touch screen such as a tablet PC and a smart phone. This synthesizer generates music based on the kinetics of particles under a two-dimensional physics engine. The particles move in the screen to synthesize sounds according to their own physical properties, which are shape, size, mass, linear and angular velocity, fr...

Using the Touch Screen as a Controller for Portable Computer Music Instruments

Using mobile devices as instruments in computer music is one of the goals of the “Pure Data anywhere” project [5]. An obstacle we encounter is controllability, because most of the devices do not offer the necessary interface, such as MIDI or USB, in order to be controlled by external controllers. Also, attaching external controllers to the devices would make them less portable. This paper inves...

Jamsketch: a drawing-based real-time evolutionary improvisation support system

In this paper, we present JamSketch, a real-time improvisation support system which automatically generates melodies according to melodic outlines drawn by the users. The system generates the improvised melodies based on (1) an outline sketched by the user using a mouse or a touch screen, (2) a genetic algorithm based on a dataset of existing music pieces as well as musical knowledge, and (3) a...
