Let H be a graph, and let CH(G) be the number of (subgraph isomorphic) copies of H contained in a graph G. We investigate the fundamental problem of estimating CH(G). Previous results cover only a few specific instances of this general problem, for example, the case when H has degree at most one (monomer-dimer problem). In this paper, we present the first general subcase of the subgraph isomorphism counting problem which is almost always efficiently approximable. The results rely on a new graph decomposition technique. Informally, the decomposition is a labeling of the vertices such that every edge is between vertices with different labels and for every vertex all neighbors with a higher label have identical labels. The labeling implicitly generates a sequence of bipartite graphs which permits us to break the problem of counting embeddings of large subgraphs into that of counting embeddings of small subgraphs. Using this method, we present a simple randomized algorithm for the counting problem. For all decomposable graphs H and all graphs G, the algorithm is an unbiased estimator. Furthermore, for all graphs H having a decomposition where each of the bipartite graphs generated is small and almost all graphs G, the algorithm is a fully polynomial randomized approximation scheme. We show that the graph classes ofH for which we obtain a fully polynomial randomized approximation scheme for almost all G includes graphs of degree at most two, bounded-degree forests, boundedlength grid graphs, subdivision of bounded-degree graphs, and major subclasses of outerplanar graphs, series-parallel graphs and planar graphs, whereas unbounded-length grid graphs are excluded. Additionally, our general technique can easily be applied to proving many more similar results.

Asymptotic Enumeration and Limit Laws of Planar Graphs

A graph is planar if it can be embedded in the plane, or in the sphere, so that no two edges cross at an interior point. A planar graph together with a particular embedding is called a map. There is a rich theory of counting maps, started by Tutte in the 1960’s. However, in this paper we are interested in counting graphs as combinatorial objects, regardless of how many nonequivalent topological...

Counting Embeddings of Planar Graphs Using DFS Trees

Previously counting embeddings of planar graphs [5] used P-Q trees and was restricted to biconnected graphs. Although the P-Q tree approach is conceptually simple, its implementation is complicated. In this paper we solve this problem using DFS trees, which are easy to implement. We also give formulas that count the number of embeddings of general planar graphs (not necessarily connected or bic...

Labeling Subgraph Embeddings and Cordiality of Graphs

Let $G$ be a graph with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$, a vertex labeling $f : V(G)rightarrow mathbb{Z}_2$ induces an edge labeling $ f^{+} : E(G)rightarrow mathbb{Z}_2$ defined by $f^{+}(xy) = f(x) + f(y)$, for each edge $ xyin E(G)$.  For each $i in mathbb{Z}_2$, let $ v_{f}(i)=|{u in V(G) : f(u) = i}|$ and $e_{f^+}(i)=|{xyin E(G) : f^{+}(xy) = i}|$. A vertex labeling $f$ of a graph $G...

There is no universal countable random-free graph

Counting Euclidean embeddings of rigid graphs

A graph is called (generically) rigid in Rd if, for any choice of sufficiently generic edge lengths, it can be embedded in Rd in a finite number of distinct ways, modulo rigid transformations. Here we deal with the problem of determining the maximum number of planar Euclidean embeddings as a function of the number of the vertices. We obtain polynomial systems which totally capture the structure...
