The Application of Dither and Noise - Shaping toNyquist - Rate
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper discusses the theory of dithered and noise-shaped quantisation, and in particular their application to Nyquist rate digital audio. Dither is shown to be essential if quantisation-related distortion is to be avoided. Careful application of noise-shaping is shown to be of audible beneet by increasing the perceived dynamic range of a signal. Various drawbacks of the technique are discussed. In particular thèfragility' of signals processed in this way is noted, and the ease with which the beneets may be undone is illustrated. to copy and store it in magnetic or electronic form and to make a single hard copy, for private study, educational use or other non-commercial purpose, subject to the following conditions: the document shall remain complete and unaltered, and no charge shall be made for access to it. Advances on Calculating Effective Dither for Audio Signals
Dithering represents a well-established, attractive technique for minimizing the audibility of the error produced during requantization of digital audio signals. However, it is also known that, as dither is applied as controlled, additive random noise prior requantisation, it also increases the overall quantization noise level and audibility. In this work, a novel dither generator is presented,...

متن کاملEfficient Linearisation of Sigma-Delta Modulators using Single-Bit Dither
Sigma-delta modulation, where a single-bit quantiser is embedded within a negative feedback loop (Fig. 1), is now a commonly-used technique for implementing high-resolution analogue-to-digital and digital-toanalogue converters (DACs), principally because of a favourable insensitivity to component tolerancing [1]. Single-bit quantisation generates relatively high levels of quantisation noise, he...
متن کاملCombined Shaping and Precoding for Interference Cancellation at Low SNR
We investigate the application of the nested coding framework for cancelling known interference at low SNR, that is PX/PZ ≈ 1 and below. We consider multi-dimensional precoding, with anticipation of Ns > 1 “future” interference samples. Unlike non-precoded transmission, where capacity can be achieved at low SNR without shaping, optimum precoding at low SNR does require shaping. Eyuboglu and For...
متن کاملTime-Quantized Frequency Modulation, Time-Domain Dither, Dispersive Codes, and Parametrically Controlled Noise Shaping in SDM*
Time-domain quantization (TDQ) and noise shaping applied to linear frequency modulation (LFM) offers an alternative although unconventional means of generating uniformly sampled 1-bit code with characteristics similar to that generated by feedback sigma–delta modulation (SDM). Fundamental insight into the SDM process emerges by exploiting the relationship between uniform quantization and phase ...
