Microrheology with modulated optical nanoprobes (MOONs)

چکیده
Metal-capping of one hemisphere of a nano or microparticle breaks the particle’s optical symmetry, allowing its orientation to be tracked using fluorescence and reflection. Tracking orientation and rotation allows the torques acting on the particles be inferred. In addition to serving as rotational nanoviscometers these probes report on local Brownian, magnetic and biomechanical torques. r 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Single-particle tracking of janus colloids in close proximity.
We describe algorithms and an experimental method based on differential interference contrast microscopy to discriminate optically anisotropic colloidal spheres under situations where diffraction owing to their close proximity causes overlapping images. The data analysis is applied to modulated optical nanoprobes (MOONs) that are coated with metal on one hemisphere. These methods enable single-...
متن کاملMagnetically modulated optical nanoprobes
We have developed magnetically modulated optical nanoprobes ~MagMOONs! to magnetically modulate the signal from fluorescent probes and thus separate it from autofluorescence, electronic offsets, and other background signals. These microand nanosized particles emit fluorescence signals, indicating chemical concentrations, and blink in response to rotating magnetic fields. Demodulating the signal...
متن کاملFrequency modulated microrheology.
Coupling analog frequency modulation (FM) to the driving stimulus in active microrheology measurements conducted with optical tweezers effectively parallelizes numerous single-frequency experiments. Consequently, frequency modulated microrheology (FMMR) can efficiently characterize the dynamic stress response of complex fluids over several frequency decades in a single experiment. The time requ...
متن کاملEu, Gd-Codoped Yttria Nanoprobes for Optical and T₁-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
Nanoprobes with multimodal functionality have attracted significant interest recently because of their potential applications in nanomedicine. This paper reports the successful development of lanthanide-doped Y₂O₃ nanoprobes for potential applications in optical and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. The morphology, structural, and optical properties of these nanoprobes were characterized by tran...
متن کاملAspherical magnetically modulated optical nanoprobes „MagMOONs..
Aspherical magnetic particles orient in a magnetic field due to magnetic shape anisotropy. They also emit different fluxes of light from their different geometric faces due to self-absorption and total internal reflection within the particles. The particles rotate in response to rotating magnetic fields and appear to blink as they rotate. We have made pancake and chain shaped particles and magn...
