چکیده

Ethernet performance has increased from megabits per second (Mbits/s) to gigabits per second (Gbits/s) and its popularity reflects not only its status as an IEEE standard, but because the Ethernet protocol has a number of features and benefits that have proved attractive to designers and engineers: Long established and well understood technology; Allows low-cost network implementations; Provides extensive topological flexibility for network installation; By embedding Ethernet onto smart, connected devices they have the capability to communicate via Ethernet without using a computer; and, Ethernet can guarantee successful interconnection and operation of standards-compliant products, regardless of manufacturer.

Speculative Defragmentation - A Technique to Improve the Communication Software Efficiency for Gigabit Ethernet

Modern massively parallel computers are built from commodity processors and a trend towards commodity interconnect components for Clusters of PCs (CoPs) is visible. Most of today’s networking solutions are still proprietary, but they do connect to standard buses (i.e. PCI) and in the near future the networking solutions of the Internet (e.g. Gigabit Ethernet) can offer Gigabit speeds at mass ma...

Implementation of a Software-Based TCP/IP Offload Engine Using Standalone TCP/IP without an Embedded OS

A number of TCP/IP offload engines have been developed to reduce the CPU load of processing TCP/IP, but most of them are implemented in hardware. Although hardware-based TOEs have a high performance, they lack the flexibility to accept changes in the TCP/IP. To preserve flexibility, we implemented a software-based TOE, called HLTCP 100134 (High-performance Lightweight TCP/IP). The HL-TCP is a s...

Performance Evaluation of Gigabit Ethernet and Myrinet for System-Area-Networks

Low latency and high bandwidth networking is essential for cluster computing and System-Area-Networks (SAN). The performance of a SAN optimized interconnect, Myrinet, is compared with gigabit Ethernet running TCP/IP. Though Myrinet has lower latencies and higher throughput than gigabit Ethernet, it is found that an efficient implementation of message passing interface library over TCP/IP achiev...

Implementation and performance study of a hardware-VIA-based network adapter on Gigabit Ethernet

This paper presents the implementation and performance of a hardware-VIA-based network adapter on Gigabit Ethernet. VIA is a user-level communication interface for high performance PC clustering. The network adapter is a 64-bit/66MHz PCI plug-in card containing an FPGA for the VIA Protocol Engine and a Gigabit Ethernet chip to construct a high performance system area network. The network adapte...

Performance of the communication layers of TCP/IP with the Myrinet gigabit LAN

This paper presents the performance of the Myrinet Gb/s LAN with the TCP/IP communication protocol in a cluster of Pentium based workstations. We systematically measured the bandwidth and latency of the diierent layers of the TCP/IP software and the Myrinet rmware/hardware, in order to expose bottlenecks in diierent levels of the communication protocol stack. Our study identiied several bottlen...
