The Automaticity of Social Life.

چکیده
Much of social life is experienced through mental processes that are not intended and about which one is fairly oblivious. These processes are automatically triggered by features of the immediate social environment, such as the group memberships of other people, the qualities of their behavior, and features of social situations (e.g., norms, one's relative power). Recent research has shown these nonconscious influences to extend beyond the perception and interpretation of the social world to the actual guidance, over extended time periods, of one's important goal pursuits and social interactions.

Metacognition in action: the importance of implementation intentions.
When people furnish their goal intentions ("I intend to attain the goal x!") with implementation intentions ("I will initiate the goal-directed response y when situation z arises!"), the initiation of goal-directed responses becomes automatized. As this type of automaticity stems from a single act of will, it is referred to as strategic automaticity. We report various studies demonstrating that...
متن کاملSocial cognition: categorical person perception.
In attempting to make sense of others, perceivers regularly construct and use categorical representations (e.g. stereotypes) to streamline the person perception process. A debate that has dominated recent theorizing about the nature and function of these representations concerns the conditions under which they are activated in everyday life. The present article reviews this work and considers t...
متن کاملAutomaticity in social-cognitive processes.
Over the past several years, the concept of automaticity of higher cognitive processes has permeated nearly all domains of psychological research. In this review, we highlight insights arising from studies in decision-making, moral judgments, close relationships, emotional processes, face perception and social judgment, motivation and goal pursuit, conformity and behavioral contagion, embodied ...
متن کاملThe busy social brain: evidence for automaticity and control in the neural systems supporting social cognition and action understanding.
Much social-cognitive processing is believed to occur automatically; however, the relative automaticity of the brain systems underlying social cognition remains largely undetermined. We used functional MRI to test for automaticity in the functioning of two brain systems that research has indicated are important for understanding other people's behavior: the mirror neuron system and the mentaliz...
متن کاملAutomaticity, Control, and the Social Brain
The social world is good at keeping the human brain busy, posing cognitive challenges that are complex, frequent, and enormously important to our well-being. In fact, the computational demands of the social world may be the principal reason why the human brain has evolved to its present form and function relative to other primates (Dunbar, 1993). Importantly, the human brain is often able to ma...
