چکیده

We investigate the value creation or destruction associated with the introduction of software patents in the United States in two ways. The first looks at the cumulative abnormal returns to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) firms around the time of important court decisions that impacted software patents, and the second analyzes the relationship between firms’ stock market value, the sector in which they operate, and their holdings of software patents. We find that the extension of patentability to software was initially negative for software firms, especially for those producing application software or services. However, we also find that the ownership of software patents is positively and significantly associated with Tobin’s Q, and that the market’s valuation of software patents increased following changes in the USPTO’s treatment of software patents in 1995. 1 Hall: 549 Evans Hall, Berkeley, CA 94720, [email protected]. The market value of patents and R&D: Evidence from European firms

This paper provides novel empirical evidence on the private value of patents and R&D. We analyze an unbalanced sample of firms from five EU countries France, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden and the UK in the period 1985-2005. We explore the relationship between firm’s stock market value and patents, accounting for the ‘quality’ of EPO patents. We find that Tobin’s q is positively and significantly...

The Market Value of Blocking Patent Citations

There is a growing literature that aims at assessing the private value of knowledge assets and patents. It has been shown that patents and their quality as measured by citations received by future patents contribute significantly to the market value of firms beyond their R&D stocks. This paper goes one step further and distinguishes between different types of forward citations patents can recei...

PRELIMINARY: NOT FOR CIRCULATION Pharmaceutical Patent Citations and Real Value

The number of times a patent is cited by subsequent patents is commonly used in economic research as a proxy for both the private and social value of inventions. Patent citation measures are also increasingly used by policymakers assessing the impact of innovation policies. However, there is surprisingly little direct evidence that more highly cited patents are more valuable ones, and existing ...
