چکیده

Upper and lower bounds for the number of geometric graphs of specific types on a given set of points in the plane have been intensively studied in recent years. For most classes of geometric graphs it is now known that point sets in convex position minimize their number. However, it is still unclear which point sets minimize the number of geometric triangulations; the so-called double circles are conjectured to be the minimizing sets. In this paper we prove that any set of n points in general position in the plane has at least Ω(2.631) geometric triangulations. Our result improves the previously best general lower bound of Ω(2.43) and also covers the previously best lower bound of Ω(2.63) for a fixed number of extreme points. We achieve our bound by showing and combining several new results, which are of independent interest: 1. Adding a point on the second convex layer of a given point set (of 7 or more points) at least doubles the number of triangulations. 2. Generalized configurations of points that minimize the number of triangulations have at most bn/2c points on their convex hull. 3. We provide tight lower bounds for the number of triangulations of point sets with up to 15 points. These bounds further support the double circle conjecture. 1998 ACM Subject Classification G.2.1 Combinatorics – Combinatorial algorithms

The Edge--ipping Distance of Triangulations Institut F Ur Informatik | Report 76 *

An edge-ipping operation in a triangulation T of a set of points in the plane is a local restructuring that changes T into a triangulation that diiers from T in exactly one edge. The edge-ipping distance between two triangulations of the same set of points is the minimum number of edge-ipping operations needed to convert one into the other. In the context of computing the rotation distance of b...

On two lower bound constructions

We address two problems. In the first, we refine the analysis of a lower bound construction of a point set having many non-crossing spanning trees. We also give more precise upper bounds on the maximum number of non-crossing spanning trees, perfect matchings and simple polygons of a planar point set. In the second, we give an improved lower bound construction for the d-interval problem. 1 Non-c...

An anisotropic cardinality bound for triangulations

A bound on the cardinality of planar triangulations with minimum angle is considered. It is shown that a certain integral over the edges of the triangulation is bounded by times the number of vertices. This is an alteration of a result by Mitchell [6], and allows an optimality bound on triangulations which are “well-graded” to the local feature size of an input domain [7]. In particular, this r...
