چکیده

The subgrid-scale representation of hydrometeor fields is important for calculating microphysical process rates. In order to represent subgrid-scale variability, the Cloud Layers Unified By Binormals (CLUBB) parameterization uses a multivariate probability density function (PDF). In addition to vertical velocity, temperature, and moisture fields, the PDF includes hydrometeor fields. Previously, hydrometeor fields were assumed to follow a multivariate single lognormal distribution. Now, in order to better represent the distribution of hydrometeors, two new multivariate PDFs are formulated and introduced. The new PDFs represent hydrometeors using either a delta-lognormal or a delta-double-lognormal shape. The two new PDF distributions, plus the previous single lognormal shape, are compared to histograms of data taken from largeeddy simulations (LESs) of a precipitating cumulus case, a drizzling stratocumulus case, and a deep convective case. Finally, the warm microphysical process rates produced by the different hydrometeor PDFs are compared to the same process rates produced by the LES.

HARRIS AND FOUFOULA-GEORGIOU: CLOUD MODEL DOWNSCALING Subgrid variability and stochastic downscaling of modeled clouds: Effects on radiative transfer computations for rainfall retrieval

The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) Goddard Profiling (GPROF) rainfall retrieval algorithm is an inversion type algorithm, which uses numerical cloud models and radiative transfer schemes to simulate the brightness temperatures that the TMI would see, thereby allowing one to relate hydrometeor profiles to brightness temperature. The variability in modeled hydro...

Representation of Water Table Dynamics in a Land Surface Scheme. Part II: Subgrid Variability

A lumped unconfined aquifer model has been developed and interactively coupled to a land surface scheme in a companion paper. Here, the issue of the representation of subgrid variability of water table depths (WTDs) is addressed. A statistical–dynamical (SD) approach is used to account for the effects of the unresolved subgrid variability of WTD in the grid-scale groundwater runoff. The dynamic...

Subgrid-scale model for the temperature fluctuations in reacting hypersonic turbulent flows

A direct numerical simulation ~DNS! database is used to develop a model of subgrid-scale temperature fluctuations for use in large-eddy simulations of turbulent, reacting hypersonic flows. The proposed model uses a probability density representation of the temperature fluctuations. The DNS database reveals a physically consistent relation between the resolved-scale flow conditions that may be u...

Accurate Subgrid Models for Two-Phase Flow in Heterogeneous Reservoirs

Subgrid effects can have a strong influence on flow and transport in oil reservoirs. In this work, a new model for the representation of subgrid terms is introduced and applied to two-phase reservoir flows. The model entails a generalized convection-diffusion treatment of the saturation equation as well as an extended representation for total mobility in the pressure equation. Motivation for th...
