Minimal forbidden subwords

Motivated by a study of similar problems stated for factors of words, we study forbidden subwords of a language or a word. A procedure for obtaining the set of all words avoiding a given set of subwords is presented. On the other hand, an algorithm for computing the set of minimal forbidden subwords for a word is given. The case of a two-letter alphabet appears to be particularly interesting an...

Pattern Avoidance

Consider a sequence of letters or numbers. Does a pattern exist that is avoided by the sequence? This topic is a very popular area of research in mathematics for its promising utility in computer science and other branches of mathematics, the elegant proofs and solutions, and the many open problems that still remain. Section 1 of this paper provides definitions, notations, and some properties o...

Abelian Square-Free Partial Words

Erdös raised the question whether there exist infinite abelian square-free words over a given alphabet (words in which no two adjacent subwords are permutations of each other). Infinite abelian square-free words have been constructed over alphabets of sizes as small as four. In this paper, we investigate the problem of avoiding abelian squares in partial words (sequences that may contain some h...

The sigma-sequence and counting occurrences of some patterns, subsequences and subwords

We consider sigma-words, which are words used by Evdokimov in the construction of the sigma-sequence [Evdok]. We then find the number of occurrences of certain patterns and subwords in these words.

Avoiding abelian squares in partial words

Erdös raised the question whether there exist infinite abelian squarefree words over a given alphabet, that is, words in which no two adjacent subwords are permutations of each other. It can easily be checked that no such word exists over a three-letter alphabet. However, infinite abelian square-free words have been constructed over alphabets of sizes as small as four. In this paper, we investi...
