Molecular Tools for Monitoring Infectious Diseases in Aquaculture Species
نویسندگان
چکیده
The rapid detection and identification of pathogens in infected fish, both clinically and subclinically, and in environmental samples is essential for effective health management in aquaculture. Traditional diagnostic techniques have been very useful for the identification of infectious agents in cultured fish and shellfish; however, they are limited in their speed and sensitivity. For this reason, the application of molecular biology techniques in this field has offered a wide range of possibilities in terms of decreased time required for diagnosis, and increased specificity, sensitivity and quantification of the infectious agent. This review summarises the most relevant molecular tools which have been used in aquaculture species. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Invited Review Future directions in breeding for disease resistance in aquaculture species
Infectious disease is a major constraint for all species produced via aquaculture. The majority of farmed fish and shellfish production is based on stocks with limited or no selective breeding. Since disease resistance is almost universally heritable, there is huge potential to select for improved resistance to key diseases. This short review discusses the current methods of breeding more resis...
متن کاملReview Article: An overview of climate change and prevalence of bacterial diseases in salmonid aquaculture
Food fish farming is regarded as one of the most important sectors of the aquaculture industry. Salmon farming is a major contributor to the growth of the aquaculture sector. Climate change is predicted to have a complex impact on aquatic ecosystems, including fisheries and aquaculture. Climate change can cause a fluctuation in water temperature of rivers, lakes, seas, and oceans. This can chan...
متن کاملThe Promise of Whole Genome Pathogen Sequencing for the Molecular Epidemiology of Emerging Aquaculture Pathogens
Aquaculture is the fastest growing food-producing sector, and the sustainability of this industry is critical both for global food security and economic welfare. The management of infectious disease represents a key challenge. Here, we discuss the opportunities afforded by whole genome sequencing of bacterial and viral pathogens of aquaculture to mitigate disease emergence and spread. We outlin...
متن کاملThe contribution of molecular epidemiology to the understanding and control of viral diseases of salmonid aquaculture
Molecular epidemiology is a science which utilizes molecular biology to define the distribution of disease in a population (descriptive epidemiology) and relies heavily on integration of traditional (or analytical) epidemiological approaches to identify the etiological determinants of this distribution. The study of viral pathogens of aquaculture has provided many exciting opportunities to appl...
متن کاملInfectious diseases affect marine fisheries and aquaculture economics.
Seafood is a growing part of the economy, but its economic value is diminished by marine diseases. Infectious diseases are common in the ocean, and here we tabulate 67 examples that can reduce commercial species' growth and survivorship or decrease seafood quality. These impacts seem most problematic in the stressful and crowded conditions of aquaculture, which increasingly dominates seafood pr...
