Entangled polymer systems

چکیده
Topological constraints, referred to as entanglements in the literature, dominate the viscoelastic behavior of high molecular weight polymeric liquids. To give a microscopic foundation of the phenomenological tube models which successfully describe this behavior, we have recently introduced a method for identifying the so-called primitive path mesh that characterizes the microscopic topological state of (computer generated) conformations of long-chain polymer networks, melts and solutions. Here we give a short account of this approach and discuss some applications. 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The direct link model for polymer rings as a topological field theory and the second topological moment in dense systems
Polymer rings in solution are either permanently entangled or not. Permanent topological restrictions give rise to additional entropic interactions apart from the ones arising due to mere chain flexibility or excluded volume. Conversely, entangled polymer rings systems may be formed by closing randomly entangled flexible linear chains. The dependance of linking numbers between randomly entangle...
متن کاملConstitutive Curve and Velocity Profile in Entangled Polymers during Start-Up of Steady Shear Flow
Time-dependent shear stress versus shear rate, constitutive curve, and velocity profile measurements are reported in entangled polymer solutions during start-up of steady shear flow. By combining confocal microscopy and particle image velocimetry (PIV), we determine the time-dependent velocity profile in polybutadiene and polystyrene solutions seeded with fluorescent 150 nm silica and 7.5 μm me...
متن کاملReactions at Polymer Interfaces: Transitions from Chemical to Diffusion-Control and Mixed Order Kinetics
We study reactions between end-functionalized chains at a polymer-polymer interface. For small chemical reactivities (the typical case) the number of diblocks formed, Rt, obeys 2nd order chemically controlled kinetics, Rt ∼ t, until interfacial saturation. For high reactivities (e.g. radicals) a transition occurs at short times to 2nd order diffusion-controlled kinetics, with Rt ∼ t/ ln t for u...
متن کاملCrossover time in relative fluctuations characterizes the longest relaxation time of entangled polymers.
In entangled polymer systems, there are several characteristic time scales, such as the entanglement time and the disengagement time. In molecular simulations, the longest relaxation time (the disengagement time) can be determined by the mean square displacement (MSD) of a segment or by the shear relaxation modulus. Here, we propose the relative fluctuation analysis method, which is originally ...
متن کاملConformations of entangled semiflexible polymers: entropic trapping and transient non-equilibrium distributions.
The tube model is a central concept in polymer physics, and allows one to reduce the complex many-filament problem of an entangled polymer solution to a single-filament description. We investigate the probability distribution function of conformations of confinement tubes and single encaged filaments in entangled semiflexible polymer solutions. Computer simulations are developed that mimic the ...
متن کاملStress Overshoot of Polymer Solutions at High Rates of Shear
Overshoot of shear stress, s, and the first normal stress difference, N1, in shear flow were investigated for polystyrene solutions. The magnitudes of shear corresponding to these stresses, gsm and gNm, for entangled as well as nonentangled solutions were universal functions of ġteq, respectively, and gNm was approximately equal to 2gsm at any rate of shear, ġ. Here teq 5 tR for nonentangled sy...
